My computer shop told me to use petrol to clean the paste off the CPU, i thought he was nuts, but he tells me he uses it.

Can anyone confirm this is ok..... isn't it a fire death trap:eek:

Would have thought that petrol would be a bit overkill tbh, most people on here use Isopropyl Alcohol to clean CPU's.

I'm sure somebody more knowledgable will correct me though

I don't think you should use petrol im sure it will leave some sort of residue on the CPU,
would get down to your chemist and by isopropyl alcohol or get some proper stuff off here.

Surely he knows:confused: i mean he makes computers, he sold me some of the petrol.

Im just slightly dodgy of using it before hearing of others saying it's ok.....

I wouldnt use the petrol tbh, even if he said it is ok to do so, take the advice from these guys and use the Isopropyl Alcohol, works a treat.

Go to a Chemist and get a bottle of Acetone. It will last you for ages and works a treat for cleaning paste off the CPU and Cooler.

Not necessarily mate, bloke that used to run a computer shop near me used to tell me that static didn't cause problems for computer parts  just because he builds/runs a shop doesn't mean he can't talk out of his ****

Just googling seems a few use it, mostly in America.........

I actually went the shop to buy the stuff you said, but he doesn't have it and says he uses petrol....

I removed the old paste with a microfibre cloth, it all come off without using any substance, but when i tried to apply new paste was like glue and would not smooth out.

So im guessing i need to clean it with some liquid type stuff.

'he sold me some of the petrol'. lol ! He must be sniffing it. Hardly the cheapest cleaning agent to use. Get a bottle of Acetone - job done.

Acetone is pretty overkill and very strong stuff and carrys much more risk than isopropyl alcohol.

Appartantly since standard ISO14000 its not allow to be used in manufacturing.

Stay away from nail polish its got fragrants in it and stuff which will just stick to your cpu when the acetone or something evaporates.

Acetone is perfect mate. I have used it for years for cleaning CPU's and also use it for servicing Hp Laserjet printers in the field :) Leave's no residue and evaporates straight away. Safe enough as long as your not having a smoke whilst using it. lol !

Is that not for environmental reasons though?

To the OP just go down to the chemist and get some IPA.

Out of curiosity how much did he sell the petrol for?

//hugs my big bottle of isopropyl alcohol and deathglars philtorrens big bottle of acetone.

Spose both are good, still sicking with overkill tho :)

£2, hope that got you home.

Petrol has additives and all sorts of things that will leave residues on the IHS. I bought a 500ml bottle of isopropyl alcohol over 3 years ago and I still have some left. It cost like 8-10 quid...
