PETROL to clean CPU?

I did not pour it on, little drop on the cloth, wipe it clean(the CPU) then dry it with another cloth. It was very clean and smooth and easy to put new paste oN. 2 hours later im not on fire and temps perfect.

so im happy i done it.

Because i had no other choice other than ordering stuff and waiting days. He assured me it was fine, and infact if got him to fit the cooler he would have used it anyway...

I know it's too late now but you can buy it in any decent chemist you can get a bottle for a little over a fiver

I've used spectacle lense cleaning fluid, one little spray leave it for 10 seconds and then wipe it off with a lense cleaning cloth grease comes off quite easily. Though this way could be costly, I'm just happy the lady works in a opticians.

I'm confident that he sold you petroleum distillate, i.e. lighter fuel, and not the mad **** we put in cars. This would work fine, lighter fluid is an excellent solvent. Acetone is a bit mental in that it'll eat plastics. IPA works well but doesn't have the same effect that citrus degreaser (or lighter fluid for that matter) has on pastes, so I tend to use the degreaser then IPA. You can even buy this as a duo in tiny bottles from this very shop.

I wonder how many people drip IPA onto the processor, wait for it to evaporate then proclaim it clean. The problem being that while the IPA evaporates without residue, whatever you were trying to dissolve into it will have come out of solution and remain present.

Wet and dry then acetone remains the most effective way of removing old pastes, though is rarely justified.

The more pure the alcohol the better, for obvious reasons.
However, a reality check is needed - lighter fuel, surgical spirit, or even vodka will be fine, yes is is more oily and has impurities, but it makes no practical difference.

I have always used zippo fluid or surgical spirit, and find it to be fine in terms of temperatures. And yes I am aware that these are not pure alcohol and can leave an oily residue.

Maybe its is psychological thing, but I wouldn't use petrol as I perceive it to be dirty, but in reality, there's probably not a lot in it.
