PETROL to clean CPU?

Acetone should not be used to clean cpu's. It does leave a residue when evaporated (a white film). It can also eat away the silicon chip! Yes, they tend to now use an IHS, but risk still remains. IPA is the best stuff to use.

The product he sold me was

3-in-1 Multi Purpose Oil

Hmm i wouldnt put 3 in 1 oil anywhere near my cpu :) the clues in the name its oil not petrol :)
Worst case use some swan lighter petrol ie the stuff you would fill a zippo with but like others say try get some ISO or another thing worth a try is steri wipes from the docs/chemist as there just a cloth soaked in ISO.

Acetone is a solvent which evaporates straight away. Widely used by Hp engineer's for cleaning heatsink's and paper pickup rollers on Hp products.

Bit like Thermal paste this one - they all do the same job.

Ok, i might regret it but i used the petrol.

New cpu cooler on as i type working well.

temps for idle are 32c right now, lowest was 27c and highest 40c

are those temps about right, i, actually very happy, it's so quiet.

That all depends on your CPU and whether or not it's overclocked.
Your question is like asking is £20 good for a watch - depends what sort of watch it is!

I have an i7 920 that idles higher than your max temp!

AMD 955 & not overclocked.

P.S i am not trolling i got the product mixed up, it was actually petrol not that oil 3 in 1 thing:o

anyway it's a lot quiet, only problem is my side panel don't fit back on as cooler so big!

yaaa, run prime for a few hours to get your ACTUALY highest temp.
Pc CPU idles at about 30-45c and highest at 70-80.
And I wouldn't use petrol, get some tim clean, works better than a toaster toast toast.

..cut a hole in panel with an angle grinder and hope ya dont spark up to much ...

you shouldn't use petrol as a solvent since it has a lot of oil residues, IPA or pure acetone (NOT nail varnish remover since that also has additives) are pure and clean as well as pretty cheap. This is for the same reason that you never touch the heat spreader with your fingers: oil barriers on the surface lead to poor heat transfer

Being a chemist, I can recommend IPA as the best option. Petrol is a bad choice and acetone is risky since it can react with some plastics so be very careful if you use this. It is worth the time sourcing high purity solvent whatever you choose and avoid things like nail polish remover. Like the petrol it will contain all kinds of other crap.

You can also get IPA off ebay very cheaply if your chemist does not stock it...

When I changed mobo I went to boots to get some, but they thought I was a homeless guy trying to get drunk. I will try online to avoid this awkwardness with stupid employees who "didn't buy my excuse" of trying to clean a cpu heatsink. *facepalm*
