Petty argument

Oh dear, things must be tight if you're arguing over a fiver.

Sharing petrol money is the fair way to do it, me and my friends take it in turns to use our cars when going on trips and we share the money every time without even asking.

Usually if I've gone somewhere in a group we have just split the total travel costs equally among everyone - you all wan't to make the trip so why not share it out. Even had it before where we were taking a minibus on a 3 hour drive and there wasn't quite enough seats so I drove with a few people, split the fuel for both vehicles and the minibus hire evenly among everyone as it was the fairest way to do it.

Small trips around town it's not worth the hassle for a few quid and I probably get lifts of others at some point anyway.

For a decent journey it's the done thing to share petrol money, why should one person have to take the extra cost of the travel and be your personal taxi driver?

Be a mate you stingy git!

One of my friends normally does the driving for me and one other for our 6-aside football team. He'd be playing regardless of whether we were in the car or not and we both live within 5 minutes of him, so I don't see what difference it makes that he's driving and I'm not. If it were me driving (and sometimes I do), I wouldn't expect petrol money. I'd normally only expect petrol money if I had to go out of my way to pick someone up on the way to something, otherwise I don't see what difference it makes.

Being as you are all going to the same place and he is essentially making profit from giving you a lift I don't think it's fair asking for a fiver from the pair of you to bring you, when he has to go to the same place you 2 are going.

If you had asked to be dropped there, then you pay for the petrol, not when he is going there himself and offers to bring you.

You being in the car adds no additional cost to what he would have to pay anyway, a thank you for dropping you there would be adequate enough, not making £6 profit from it.

It wouldn't happen with anyone I know with the exception of one, who has been kept in check by the fact that if they try it on, someone will volunteer to do it instead, even if it takes them a lot further out of their way. Fuel sharing for short journeys, utter nonsense in my circles, but if that's what people think makes good chums then who am I to argue.

Also asking for an amount over the odds and doing so in a text that way is scum, but each to their own.

He shouldn't even be asking for it, you should have done the right thing and offered first.

People usually offer on the day either just before or just after the lift, he even said he'd have done this. I find it cheeky to ask for more money than it'll cost him to drive to the same place he was going anyway days before the actual lift. I'd see this as an opportunity to drive myself and give a lift for free to the other guy who was getting a lift and remember never to ask him for a lift :p.

It'd be great if someone was going my way and gave me a lift for free because they were passing that way anyway, I'd save me the dough I would otherwise have to pay for a taxi, bus, train etc while they pay costs. Total win for me.

Well, win if it was a friend, just any old someone might bill you in advance.

Its quite a common thing to share the petrol money. A group of 4 people in a car is way cheaper than paying the extortionate long distance train fares.

Personally if I were the driver I wouldn't expect my passengers to pay me anything but I can see how the done thing is for everyone to chip in. I don't think the OP is annoyed about money, more at the fact that his friend has texted him demanding petrol money when in all likelihood he was planning on giving him a few quid anyway.

To think its wrong to offer money for petrol is bad.

Arguing about paying when the driver raises the issue is worse.

Spot on.

I'd be a little miffed if I wasn't offered some money or something after giving my friends people a lift irrespective of if I was heading that way. Not because I'd be out of pocket but because it's the right way to behave.

That said I'd never as for it upfront.

Not true as it is a 30 mile round trip and he wants a fiver off each of us (2). I could motorcycle there for the sum of about a quid probably.

Maybe true. Although I, myself am not selfish. I have a few friends who in the past have not paid money when asked to.

That is quite a lot actually and pretty unreasonable. Unless he is being the designated driver for a big event, in which that shifts the goalposts slightly.

Only time I've charged is when we've gone to London (approx 500 mile round trip) and I asked for £10 each to cover the fuel.

30 miles... What?
