Petty argument

When somebody comes around for dinner, you don't present them with a bill for the food & drink - it was a social gathering & you simply 'covered that event' - in the future the favour may be returned, that should be enough.

I don't believe bringing in the "exchange element" of a interpersonal relationship for such a small journey is appropriate & I'd consider it quite rude to directly ask (considering the short journey).

I would not ask for money for a lift (unless were talking a considerable trip) - neither would I appreciate being asked for it.

I think it's just common courtesy. I'd certainly offer money because driving isn't just about the trip there and back it's about the limitations (no alcohol, etc.)

Yes it's only 30 miles but I'd at least be offering. 30 miles in a taxi, for example, can be damn expensive.

It really depends on other factors such as whether they are the people who always drive, whether they take everyone everywhere, etc. and are now at the point where they're fed up of it. Hell they may have lost there jobs recently for all I know and need the money to actually get there and back.

Also if we're talking a fiver then I wouldn't even flinch - if we're talking 20 quid then I'd be surprised.

I’ve never asked for petrol money when I’m driving. Why should I when you’re coming along to share my drive and it’s my pleasure to have you along for the trip. As a passenger I would offer to share the cost if it was a longish drive.

To be fair, I think how old you are comes into it as well. When I was young, we shared the cost as none of us were that well off. Now we are older, I don't really care about it and am happy to cover the costs.

If I'd otherwise have to pay fuel, taxi fare or travel expenses to get somewhere then I'll sure as hell gladly offer some cash to a friend for taking me.

I'd rather a friend had a few quid towards his car expenses than a taxi driver.

Can't actually believe how many people here are happy with free rides places. Just because someone is going that way anyway. That shocks me.

That works when the other party returns the favour, if so, great, works well.

However it doesn't sound like the OP has a car, so it's all take and no give.

Or in your little analogy, he's eating all your dinners for a prolonged period of time without returning the favour, I.e. a freeloader.

But to clarify I wouldn't expect to pay or be paid for a spontaneous trip to the shops or something. But if it's a planned thing between friends, like we were all going to a wedding or something then chipping in would be normal I'd imagine. Unless it was very close friends.

I don't think I'd ever drive friends somewhere and expect them to pay. It'd feel odd taking money, too. I'd just expect the same treatment in return, or maybe some random money subbed from something else in the trip (like a dinner they paid for).

If it's my idea then I'd never expect anyone to pay. But if it's a group thing pre planned then most people would chip in or buy drinks etc.

Going to Download next week, im getting the train to notts then a mate is picking me up and going on to Derby. I will pay towards fuel and parking like I always do (if he wants it or not)

Stop being stingy and offer some money

The only thing I fall out with mates over is money. Either someone not paying me for something they owe or not buying a pint/round back, instead saying they have to go or being away when its their round. You get to know who the tight ****ers are so purposely dont buy them a drink or whatever else (and neither does anyone)

You should pay petrol money.

They have cars because they pay for them... it's not luck, it's not by chance. They're not automatically free for you.

£5 each for 30 miles is quite cheeky though.

Is it possible that said person is annoyed with lack of petrol money on the past, and has opted to demand petrol money in advance to avoid being ripped off again?

30 miles on a motorway is different to 30 on crap country roads too mind. Could be 10 mins or 40 mins

I'd only ask for money if doing a very long journey, say to France, where obviously we would have agreed to split the fuel costs beforehand.

If it's just going somewhere shorter, I won't ask, but I expect that they would offer some money for petrol, or to buy food or drinks as an alternative. I myself will always offer the same.

The problem I see with saying that you don't care whether you get paid or they don't care, means that potentially, it could result in less trips. If you have a friend who always does the driving, he/she might decide they can't afford another trip somewhere due to the cost. Where as, if they knew their friends are always going to help contribute, they would be more likely to do so.

40p a mile * 30 = £12. Id just say buy me a beer each - its his car too though so £5 each is reasonable. Wear and tear and all that

For 30 miles I'd never expect money, although the only time I'd ever expect petrol money is if it was a long trip ie driving to alton towers etc as that would be a fairly hefty amount of petrol for me. That being said I've never had to ask for petrol money my mates will always offer on longer runs. On nights when it's a designated driver we pay for all their entry fees and drinks which is only fair and sometimes we still bung them some money. On short runs ie to cinema I'll pay for my mates ticket or get the popcorn or something. We definitely don't keep tabs as generally it all evens itself out in the end anyways. That text would have annoyed me if I'm honest, that being said I'd have probably coughed up or offered to drive myself to save the other mates paying a fiver.

Long journey split the petrol, short journey a thanks will surfice (unless its like running you into town etc when on the sauce, then it's more of a taxi so either pay or buy their soft drinks all night)
