Petty argument

To be fair, I think how old you are comes into it as well. When I was young, we shared the cost as none of us were that well off. Now we are older, I don't really care about it and am happy to cover the costs.
Perhaps your right - but in my circle we simply exchange favours - I mean one friend tends to give more lifts, one has a home better suited for parties - I tend to go overboard on covering drinks/taxi costs on nights out - I much prefer a simple method of helping each other out than some fixed expected exchange.

As a few others have mentioned - it feels a little crass the whole thing unless its a very long trip.

Also, i'm only 28! Not that old :p

Whoa! ive not read all this thread but seriously if your mate is driving you its only fair you offer to pay a bit of the petrol money. Say it costs him £30, thats £30 hes spent, he cant drink is probably going to pick you from your door and drop you back to your door right? while you get to have a drink if you like, have no hassle getting to and from a train station and have spent nothing on the trip.

I always offer petrol money as the stuff isnt cheap and i feel its wrong to get a free lift, if the person dosnt want it then fine but i still offer and tbh i expect people to offer back when i drive.

I don't think its about the exact costs of the petrol as much is its about courtesy and them being the ones to step up and drive you around. The fact that they had to ask you makes me think this has been an issue in the past, normally its the unwritten rule on longer journeys that you either donate for the petrol fund or buy the guy some beers on the other side.

Txt didn't say each. Give him a fiver between you and see what he says if anything. He would have to be a nob to demand more but he probably deserves something even if he did have to ask.

I never ask my friend's for petrol money on long journeys, they always offer to pay as it's courtesy. I don't see the problem as everyone is winning by splitting the cost.

Also, i'm only 28! Not that old :p

Old enough to have dinner parties, which generally happens when you are settled in your own home whether bought or renting. I was talking more about early twenties and younger when you split the costs. Pfft 28 is over the hill :p

What kind of friends demand money from other friends for taking them in their car? Offering to put some money towards petrol, or them requesting a few quid towards it, sure, but otherwise?

Or do you people always have money to give whenever you get in a friends car? Bizarre.

Sounds like op has a rep for not offering at all so driver is 'asking' up front.

Seems a bit strange to ask for £ for a 30mile trip unless there are significant parking charges, though.

friends are friends..we dont ask each other for money because we all know that we do stuff for each other and it all gets equaled out in the end.

If i am going a long run and take passengers i normally say, as i got the fuel you lot are buying the coffee's and sticky buns. It normally gets a laugh koz they know i can eat a lot of sticky buns. Geeza bun Geeza bun....And make them extra sticky....

I don't expect people to pay for petrol if I'm giving them a lift.

I don't expect people to pay if I've invited them out to dinner either.

Same here. I'd never ask for petrol money. I've never accepted it when offered and I've never felt put out when it hasn't been offered.

He's offered to drive you and asked you to chip in for the costs which is fair and reasonable. If you don't want to then drive yourself, it's not a problem, don't be so tight.
