Phenom II X6

Go i7 the 920 is 165 here on overclock and is faster in every benchmark

It is indeed good value for money & over all faster atm. but its certainly not faster in every benchmark which the reviews clearly show, there is absolutely no need to exaggerate & especially is the light of such evidence is frankly shocking.

1090T is like an Intel Extreme Edition, its unlocked. 1055T is better comparison to 920 really imo. Which is same price.

And factor in the cost of the mobo, i think your quids in. Still Im not all that impressed with reviews, very few real world comparisons. Im looking forward to getting mine and seeing some real differences. :)

I'm kind of tempted with this...

What sort of upgrade would it be compared to a Q6600 @ 3GHZ?

Photoshop / video work BTW.

These reviews are worth reading:

As said before the AM3 motherboards are cheaper too:

The 800 series chipsets in the second link (and a few of the 700 series chipsets in the first link) have both SATA 3.0 and USB3.0 and cost under £100!

Same architecture yes, but got to rem those extra two cores fit into the same 125W TDP as the 965, so there has been some tweaking of the fab process going on.

Don't think they've changed much to be honest, to get the same TDP they reduced the clockspeed by 400Mhz and introduced the core throttling thing.

The X6 1090T runs at 3.2GHZ across all six cores and has the same 125W TDP as the 4 core 3.2GHZ Phenom II X4 955BE. In most of the reviews the peak power consumption of the processors is either similar to the 125W 3.4GHZ X4 965 or even a bit lower. The X6 die is physically bigger and is made using a Low-K Di-electric material according to reviews.

Hey,

Another question (I'm really out of the AMD loop, so forgive me). What's the chances of putting the chip + board together and getting a big fat 0 because the BIOS doesn't work with it? :p

bios for Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P BIOS F8g

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SM37GKYW

so whats different in this to the last beta F8f ???

where did it come from as well ? not to question your intentions but dont wanna foobar my board before I get the X6 later today :D ... and so afr the F8f is at least stable (hopefully compatible with the 1090 or I may see smoke rising  )

well cheers I have downloaded it but may resist using until I try the 1090 on the F8f first :D

edit ; ---- questions do I trust someone linking a new BIOS who only has 2 posts to his/her name on that forum ??? think I will stick with F8f which appears to work according to that link and await an official release

I dont mean to sound like a tool or anything but you guys are having to use a beta bios to run the X6 chips on a ~£150 board when the £55 board im using has had a full bios that was released at least a week before launch of the X6 range

I think its to do with the chipset ... they have dragged their feet somewhat with some of the boards .. we just have what was the top of range but is now relegated to second line of customer support

at least there is an unofficial BIOS in the wild - some boards have not even got that

This is true, but as sub £100 boards arent really intended for enthusiasts then you'd think they get the dearer boards supporting the chips first as they're the most likely to be needing the update to begin with
