Apparrently a company in the USA has leaked the prices of AMD's new quad-cores:

HD9500WCGDBOX - CPU Desktop Phenom X4 9500 (4MB,95W,AM2) box - $247
HD9600WCGDBOX - CPU Desktop Phenom X4 9600 (4MB,95W,AM2) box - $278
HD9700XAGDBOX - CPU Desktop Phenom X4 9700 (4MB,125W,AM2) box - $288

Don't know how true or real they are but thought I would share.

Can post a link to the news but don't know if it's against the rules...

9500 = £180
9600 = £204
9700 = £210

My guess at prices. Thats inc VAT

Now let see how far I am out.

If those prices are correct would that put them more than the new Penryn cores? (one's around the Q6600 performance?)

Didn't know how interested people would be as it seems everyone has left AMD and jumped on the Intel band-wagon :D

(I know servers etc are where AMD has been growing and the fact that us enthusiasts are a small percentage of the market)

If AMD can put themselves near par with Intel & run with less power etc I would move back but atm I do see why everyone has moved over to Intel.

Found an interesting story about AMD and the 'Sinking ship' that they are apparently on.

Story here

Although I wasn't there for the 1ghz mark I did think that something like this must have happened before.

Exactly I used to run a hardware site many many years ago, before AMD hit the 1GHz mark, before the P4 and 3 in fact.

We ralleyd behind AMD because at the time they were pushing the much larger Intel in to a corner with positive results; faster processors at lower costs.

AMD, the smaller company, led benchmarks over Intel for some time both in the high-end pentium/athlon battle and crushed their 'budget' celeron with the duron.

It bugs me how what used to a be a mixed community is now 'Intel savy' and anti AMD forgetting the history of everything cpu! I guess its just the age of contributors on forums like this, perhaps they are young and don't appreciate the heritage of such a plight?

Yer.. yer .... YER...

I've been AMD since i heard i could buy a cheap athlon and clock the nuts off it !!

So i did, since then i've just let my p4 gather dust in the cornor as a file server.....

I hope the new CPUs push down the cost of the dual cores, really want a 5000 black edition !

I've said it before and I'll say it again, get what's good for the money, not who has the best logo.

In any case, didn't AMD start by reproducing Intel's CPUs and flogging them off cheaper? Bootleggers. :p

Edit: To be honest, It'd be good if AMD made something good, price wars are good by default.

I'm buying a 5000 BE regardless.

For £80 you can get a cpu that will run at 3.3GHz on stock volts with some hitting 3.6-3.7GHz with added volts.

At those speeds why on earth do you need to worry about Core2 etc anyway? Perhaps just for bragging rights in benchmarks, because lets face it real world performance is very close.

thats £80 with no heatsink or fan.
For £55 you can buy an E2180, which can overclock to ~3.6ghz regularly and do more per clock cycle.

I like what you say and wholeheartedly agree :)

Most people aren't "Intel Savvy", they just buy what's best at the time.:)

So at this stage,they look slower than the current Intel quads and are more expensive? Looks like i will be running my 5000+ for abit longer :(

I appreciate the sentiments, I honestly do, but in the grand scheme of things they count for nought in the enthusiast market. You assess what's out NOW and then weigh up the price/performance of both, and then buy the best price/performance you can get. No matter which way you look at it, AMD aren't providing this currently, and this isn't likely to change with the introduction of Phenom now that Penryn is almost on the scene. It's sad, but that's just way it is.
