Phenom X3 Worth It?

Hey.

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit will this detect the new cpu? I hope I don't have to re-install everything again for it to function properly will I.

I don't mind if I have to as long as it works that's the main thing.

Just hoping it's a simple plug in and play.
99.9% u will need to reformat... before i sent my 9850 back to amd, i had to reformat..

Didn't format when I went from my C2D E4300 to my Q6600... all I needed to do was update my bios.

I dual boot between Vista 64 and XP 32, and both worked flawlessly without me needing to do anything.

but i think amd processors work abit different... memory controller is in the cpu... I dual boot Vista 64/32 and XP 32 and all 3 needed a reinstall. i went from a 9500 to a 9850BE

TBH if games run fine now, and you don't actually need encoding to be twice as fast, I would stick with the 4200+, it should do 5000+ speed easy, mine does 5200+ even on a budget mobo, but can't go any higher since my mobo only offers +0.05v for the cpu, I'm certain it would do 5600+ speed with +0.01v.

Seems a bit silly to spend £150 and have games run the same IMO, don't know the rest of your spec but it could buy a 1tb hard drive and 4gb ram, or an 8800GTS 512... :D

I don't mind having to format if needs be got everything backed up now, certainly going for the 9750 X4 on Wednesday as i've made my mind up about going quad.

Hi Chaps.

Just remembered something, how will i tell if the Phenom I purchase is either a 95w or a 125w as there are two versions floating about.

In what instance would a 3 core processor be useful then? im not sure whey AMD have released these tbh (i know someone will completely own me know with a very good aswer lol).

Multi-tasking in windows, games/apps that use multi-cores, but don't look for multiples of 2 (bad coding to assume 2/4/8 etc cores, after all xbox360 has 3 cores).

When price is same as 2 core chip so the performance when 3 cores are used is free, and significantly cheaper than a quad core chip!

AMD I presume are binning quad cores where one core has failed, as opposed to making a 3 core chip in the first place.

Thanks for popping in, bye bye now run along! :D

You echo my thoughts but in a more refined manner ;).

Mista Gee did you get your new CPU?. Overclocking on each core and being able to run at that speed sounds like fun :D.

the thing is, hes right, compared on what intel have to offer for the same price, they do fail.
9850 vs q6600 it isn't that far apart on performance..in some benchmarks the 9850 beats the q6600..

also intel q6600 as been out for 12 months, i bet the price on release wasn't the price its at now.. the new phemons have only just came out so of course they'll be alittle higher on price.

The thing is we were not born yesterday & the Phenom is not that far from the intel clock for clock at the same price as some like to make out & also that fact its about freedom of choice & preference for what ever reason & circumstance & not everyone likes to be dictated to in there buying decisions.

And if all the poster can do is point out the obvious then don't bother posting at all because we already know.

I just saying on what else is out there for your money, Chill the **** out jezz some people. Go be heppy with your blue screen of death ;)

I'm just saying we all ready know...really we do, don't think for a second that members of OcUK who have AMD cpu`s Mobos only do so because they don't know about what intel has to offer & need reminding every other day.
