Phobias

i have a friend whos scared of bannanas, no joke if he see's one he feels dizzy and faints and turns a greeny colour like hes going to be sick.

I also have a friend whos scared of buttons only loose ones tho if ther attached hes fine with them.

Remarkably, I have my first appointment this afternoon to discuss exaclty this issue (after more than a decade of ignoring it). First appointment will be to discuss what 'tools' we use and dig into the roots of it, which have similarities with your own situation. I'll let you know how i get on.

When I had treatment back in 1988 I was told that a Psychologist did the talking but a Psychiatrist could also prescribe medication so how you can put Physciatrists down is beyond me.
So can GPs, what does that prove exactly?
pyschologists are what every Tom, Dick and Harry with average grades at school go to be at university.
I'm talking about clinical psychologists, not every Tom, Dick and Harry.

Um, I'm pretty sure that clinical psychologists and 'regular' psychologists study the same thing at university. Namely, psychology.

Even so, you still think psychiatrists are inferior to clinical psychologists? They both have different roles for a start, and even then psychiatrists will have also had training in clinical psychology, so why is it that psychiatrists 'talk a load of ****'?

you have a fear not a phobia

the best cure for fear is to expose yourself to what your afraid of. start with small journeys on quiet roads and work yourself up

Reading through this thread (with interest due to being in a similar boat) i thought your first post Dmpoole was insensitive and unnecessary. I went on to see you back off the point, but i am not surprised others picked up on it. Certainly not intending to pick a fight but it seemed like an unusual stance to take with someone just asking for advice, particularly when, as you were keen to point out, you have experienced phobia at arms length. Perhaps you and the those baiting you have hijacked enough?

The session i just had was effectively hypnotherapy and was very interesting. We'll see whether it has an effect.

So why haven't the OTHERS decided to say 'Oh look he's learnt something, he realises he's wrong and he's detracted'?
Because people don't want to see it.
Not even the OP has seen it.

Let me ask everyone who has had treatment for a mental illness a question:
Why is it that you all seem to think you know everything about it.

Well I certainly don't know bugger all about it.
I know how I got over it though.

Because we can't give everyone a cookie everytime they do something mildly correct.

But you could have said 'I bet you feel foolish now?'.
To keep having a go when I retracted several posts later is pathetic.

I could have...but I didn't. You wouldn't have rescinded it if he hadn't said he was quivering to write about it. It still would have been a phobia.

I don't think it would because being scared of getting into a car would not be an irrational fear. (Please notice I wrote 'I don't think')
However, quivering while writing about it, rushing off to the toilet to be sick would be.
OP, notice how I am on your side now.
I'll write it in big letters if I can make it any clearer.

Do you need to know me for me to have an opinion of you?

Yes because you're scaring me.
