Phone performance

Even with a 50% improvement as Qualcomm hope, its way behind.

then why put those GFLOPS stats in the table - are they just inflated projections?

edit - sorry I re-read that article and it was indeed inflated projections by Qualcomm. When I first read it I did wonder how they made such a big jump ;)

This is at 800*480 rather than 720p and its slightly ahead of 4430.

Why isnt the A5 chip in there?

Edit - or is it similar to this one?

Yes, but that's with the new app which allows testing of the app on non-native resolutions. Anandtech have picked 720p.

So what I'm saying is that, you find the performance advantage from first picture and then apply same difference + 50% to new graph.

I (I guess like a lot of people) would be more interested in build quality, screen resolution and viewability in light conditions but most of all... Better battery life!!

I don't play anything more than games like angry birds and risk, my phone is more of a utility device. Calendar, emails, the bay, IM, social network etc etc.

The only apps I buy are simple games, widgets, utilities.

I have a desire, and yes would love this to be quicker, but for me I don't see gpu power ever being why I want to upgrade. After this new wave of phones I really see hardware being in excess for most people with the justification for upgrading being a new toy lol. Infact my next phone I may even be willing to sign a 24 month contract :0

Isnt the other one at 800*480 anyway?

- 1280 x 720 is a lot higher res so why is iphone 4 11.2fps at 720p but only 5.9fps at 800x480?

I would love to be able to set custom Mhz clock for iphone 4S and RAM usage etc to increase battery life from 1/2 a day to 1 week. This way I could use as a laptop/phone/gaming mahcine mid week then weekend and holidays could limit to phone, text, alarm and internet.

Best of both worlds

Well iphone 4 native resolution is actually 960*640. But a good point.

Will have to look into it by finding the first article they start using the 2.1 app.

edit:

okay it was in the sgs2 review they started using it.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4686/samsung-galaxy-s-2-international-review-the-best-redefined/17

Again you see the iphone 4 jump in performance but they don't explain it.

Random question - Apple use Power VR graphics chips? Im sure I used to have a Power VR graphics card aroudn the time of TNT just before Geforce and Geforce 256

Maybe they are learning how to shrink cards down to minute sizes and in 5 years we will see an 8800GT crammed in an iphone 7

Well in a very crude way that is what happens as part of Moore's law.

However, it wouldn't be a smart idea to ignore all the technology improvements we've had in the past decade.

Your not far off tbh, don't forget the S3 snapdragon is usually crippled by single channel memory. Exynos/OMAP4/Apple A5 devices have typically double the bandwidth. With better drivers and double the clock rate it should get much closer to the SGX543mp2. :)
The SGS2 T-Mobile version could be a good indication. .. it's top of the pile here. http://nena.se/nenamark/view?version=2 (warning - early results could be wrong :p)

Mali400MP is scalable to 4 cores. That's a lot of gpu processing power.

Exynos uses all 4 Mali cores and @ ~466MHz it virtually matches the 543mp2 @ ~266Mhz (iPad 2) The 32nm Exynos die shrink will have this clock as standard I think (Mali T604 should be a marked improvement, x5 performance ARM say... Samsung will probably use it in their first Cortex A15 SoC)

I don't know anybody that wants one, plus, it's not a phone!

It's got the full Skype app... I'll give you a ring when I get one? ;) :D
(Genuine question... Out of interest what games does iTunes have that Android doesn't? Apart from one or two all the ones I see are available on Android too)

One single app :p and its supposedly running smooth as silk on the Tab 10.1, so i expect the iPad 2 version will do also.
So what will that mean 6 months down the line when all the hardware is 60% quicker again? pointless speed bumps.

By 'running smooth as silk' you mean gimped to 1400*1400 images with limited functionality? But it indicates major software companies are taking these mobile devices very seriously.
(New architecture + HKMG die shrink + more cores + even smarter chip designs = much, much more than 60% speed bump. Intel's looming with a 22nm all new Atom in 2013 too)

Bring on the future!

You sure? Anandtech never label the GPU in Exynos as Mali-400MP4.

edit:

They do, you're right. :)

I guess nothing comes close to SGX543MP4 then.

Yep, Hertfordshire is leading the world for low power GPU technology :D

Using a SGX543MP2/4 does lead to a massive SoC @ 45nm. I think that's why we didn't see the new super thin iPhone 5 chassis this year, it was just too big/generated too much heat. Even Tegra 3 is 30% smaller than the Apple A5.
NVIDIA told us that although the iPad 2 made it easier for it to sell a big SoC to OEMs, it's still not all that easy to convince manufacturers to spend more on a big SoC.

Although that big ZiiLabs SoC, with 96 GPGPU cores, has massive compute power. Wonder if any OEMs pick that up?

Nearly all of them, enough that it would be impossible to list even the good ones. The vast majority of iOS games are not available on Android and I'd say iOS gets more good games released every week than Android sees in months.

Sadly this is not an exaggeration. The gaming scene on both platforms aren't really comparable at the moment.

Any chance you can link a few of the good new ones? I'm looking at the app store and all I can see is cross platform games (9mm and all gameloft ones, shaowgun, glu games, Ea etc.)
There are a few (enix etc) but Android is getting quality exclusives too (minecraft etc)

Maybe they're just not showing up on my 1st gen?

Minecraft is coming out on iOS too, it just landed on Android first.

Unfortunately you wont usually find most of good games in the iTunes top 25 as most casual phone owners are only going to play stuff like Angry Birds and Bejeweled. But here's a few off the top of my head:

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Broken Sword 1/2 and Beneath a Steel Sky director's cuts
Monkey Island 1/2 Special Editions
Dungeon Raid
Final Fantasy Tactics
Ascension
King of Dragon Pass
Groove Coaster
Carcasonne (there's an Android Carcassone by a different developer but it's inferior and doesn't have online multiplayer)
Sword and Poker 1/2
Osmos
Auditorium
World of Goo
Civilization Revolution
All the Pathpix games
Aralon
Espgaluda II, Dodonpachi and Death Smiles
Chuchu Rocket
Gesundheit
Puzzle Quest 1/2
Neuroshima Hex
The QuickHook games

I could list far more but it's already longer than I'd like and not really the thread for it. It would be pretty futile anyway as there's just too many. Your best bet is to just check out sites like toucharcade.com every day.

Edit: Sorry, I just realised that you asked for links to new ones. A lot of the ones I listed are pretty new, but not all of them. My advice would be to check Touch Arcade every Thursday as that's when the big new games land each week.

You missed Infinity Blade, Real racing 1/2, GTA chinatown wars, NBA 2k12, champ/football manager, Sonic & Sega all star racing (don't laugh, its awesome :p), Shrek Cart,

Then there's a few which are IOS exclusive outside of the Xperia play such as Fifa 12, Bad Company 2.

And finally others which are superior (graphically/frame rate) such as Dead Space, Lego harry potter etc.

-edit-

Oh emm gee, Scribblenauts released ! /orgasm heh
