Photographing inside derelict and abandoned buildings

Edit, just spoke to a mate who is a bouncer in Chichester, I'm shooting his wedding soon and mentioned urbex and he mentioned there's a mental asylum near him that I can shoot. Going to meet up over the weekend so stay tuned!

I know this is offtopic, so sorry in advance... but i wondered why you mentioned he was a bouncer? doens't seem to have much bearing on the rest of the conversation :P

Mental Asylums though... i think i'd start with someting a little less frightening for my first urbex. An old factory or warehouse :P

depends who you meet in there, and what you have with you. if you damage summit then it's breaking and entering and that'll get you in trouble. if you take tools with you, you are 'going equipped'.

Looking at your location, sevs shouldn't be far from you.. :D

If you damage something it's burglary only if the prosecution can prove beyond reasonable doubt that you had mens rea, i.e. that you entered the property with the intent to cause damage. Entering to explore and then damaging something wouldn't become burglary.

Its not a subject to make jokes about but that 'pedo might live in there' comment cracked me up. 'Hmm I'll just settle here in this abandoned place in case a child wonders in...or maybe a rat'.

I wouldnt say I've made a hobby of it but I do go into local derelict places when I have the chance and access is easy and safe looking enough. Walked into some old MOD prefab houses and a nursery that were about to be demolished to make luxury apartments. The nursery playground with toys still lying around was interesting.

In short I love filth but I wouldn't go in anywhere where I am aware of a risk, just places you can easily walk into. Also some junk is found lying around without the need to enter places, like abandoned cars, vicinity of the rubbish dump, unkept industrial areas. Those can do the job without the need for trespassing (much).

Old cemeteries are also a powerful subject thats perfectly legal to enter.

dive right in, my first 'proper' explore was off Whittingham, which is an uber huge creepy asylum with masses of tunnels and all sorts :D

no, if you take something then it is burglary. If you enter and cause damage whilst doing so, even if you do not take anything then that is breaking and entering. Two seperate offences. Then there is aggrevated tresspass. If you are asked to leave, and don't - then that becomes a criminal offence.

We should organise an Urbex.

Be a good chance to get some good shots, and also to learn from eachother (especially for newer photographers).

I'll be up for it. Maybe somewhere legit though as it's a meet. Like observe from outside or something....

Last year there was a street in Chelmsford that was completely abandoned, where the Council had bought all the houses for development. That would have been awesome to take shots in. Driving past it looked like something out of Half Life 2 or similar. Empty gardens with toys on, front doors open and smashed windows. Brilliant location. It's all been knocked down now though :(

Something like that would be good.

I tried a little bit of this kind of photography today. Mainly in an overgrown disused farm. There was a few run down out houses but nothing special. These are the photo's I've edited. I cant decide which style i like best?

What are you talking about? There is no such thing as "breaking and entering", and burglary is:

Theft Act 1968 said:
A person is guilty of burglary if he enters any building or part of a building as a trespasser with intent to steal, inflict grievous bodily harm, or do unlawful damage to the building or anything in it.

meh, ok i was wrong. i've just gone with not breaking anything, or nicking anything! :)

i would not recommend wrapping a old tshirt to a pole and lighting it on fire for a TORCH, tthe whole place can catch on fire, old wood burns FAST. just a personal experiance ;)

Here you go.

Get the idea now? :)

My photography has improved 10 fold since buying a flash, I CANNOT believe how long I went without one.

Buy it basically! :p :D

bit of a thread bump, but if anybody lives around Manchester and fancies a bit of urbexing with a complete newbie, mail my trust :)

Spent all day (it's quiet at work) reading about it, and it's fascinating stuff :)
