Photography Inspiration

As a couple of guys have mentioned I too have been inspired by a lot of the photos produced on these forums but a bit closer to home there's Niall Benvie, he's a Conservation Photographer who's work / blog can be found here :http://www.imagesfromtheedge.com/

If you want to do a google for him, click on the image results for some cracking wildlife shots, the Stags and Squirrels are two of my favourite subjects of his.

Again a 'Tog that uses quite a bit of processing but I believe to stunning effect - Nick Brandt

Maybe you should index the OP in catagories and then yes, definatley :p

(That's for the lazy people ;))

How do you mean? Photography is a difficult thing to specifically categorize other than genre shots. The problem with doing that is in that it would remove the opportunity to post supporting images of the photographers work. It would be nice to be able to do this in some way tho.

Just to keep the info going and not have this end up as a scattering of references split between discussion.

Macro photography is something of a love of mine especially when done well. This guy I think excels in his work.

Sites that I frequent regularly.

Photo.net: http://photo.net/ - excellent site full of extremely talented photographers. Take the time to browse the Gallery. There is a whole range of brilliant work in there, but beware there are some nudes scattered through there and some that are distinctly NSFW.

Corbis: http://www.corbisimages.com - this is a stock photography site which in itself is useful for inspiration but they also tend to have some very good photography spreads on the front page which I find quite inspirational.

Getty Images: http://www.gettyimages.com/ - pretty much the same as above

Stockxpert: http://www.stockxpert.com/ - as above

Thanks for sharing; some truly remarkable stuff. May have to dust off my macro lens! His EXIF shows 50mm; so presuming tubes and a 50mm? He does not seem to be using any fancy kit. I am guessing some sort of ringflash setup? Anyone know?

From the interview linked earlier said:
I use a Pentax *ist DL dslr camera body and several different lens set-ups for my macro work. The main lens I use is a 1980’s 28mm Pentax Takumar (Bayonet) prime lens reversed to either a bellows, some extension tubes, or a 2x teleconverter (and rarely a combination of those). For lighting I have an old Vivitar Zoom Thyristor flash mounted to a flash bracket diffused by a homemade flash diffuser/softbox.

Thanks :-)

If I have a 105mm macro lens; would tubes get me close enough? I don't have a clue about reversing rings/bellows etc? One of his shots he makes a reference at shooting 6:1 - 8:1?!? My macro allows 1:1; even with tubes I would guess I would get 2:1? or have I got that wrong?

And can you use bellows with tubes and a macro lens if thats what gives the extra length? his images are amazingly sharp too; don't you lose a certain amount of quality even with tubes? Would tubes and a 105mm 2.8 Sigma macro lens be better than tubes and a 50mm 1.8?

Wheres famas when you want to talk macro ;)

ps. sorry for hijacking the thread.

In theory yeah - I have the 105mm plus some Kenco extension tubes but the light has been so rubbish that I haven't had the chance to really use them. I'm not sure what sort of magnification I should be able to get.
