Photography Topic thread...

So, you guys fancy helping me spend some money?

Ahhh my favourite subject :D

Body: 60D, I'd like to dabble with video and feel I might outgrow an XXXD quickly. This feels like a logical choice for me. Is it worth getting the kit lens with one or body only?

It all depends on your budget, but if you are looking at the second hand market the 50D is worth a shout and the 40D is still a damn good camera! Which leaves more opportunity to decent glass.

Prime for portraits and walkabout: 50mm 1.4? Any particular brand?

Whilst the 1.4 is far nicer than the 1.8, for what you will be doing I think the 1.8 will be fine :) saves you some pennys.

Lens with a bit of reach? Really not sure what to look for here.

Sigme 70-300 is a good shout and starting point :)

Tripod: Redsnapper with ball head?

Only ever bought manfrotto's so can't comment, although Redschnappahs are supposed to be very good!

Off camera flash? No idea here.

Filters and diffussers for items above? No idea here either.

Wouldn't worry about that for now, however I would buy a 430ex II flash :)

Battery grip? Best to stay with the official Canon?

Grips for the XXD cameras are cheap so may as well :)

Just bought yet another EF 50mm f1.8 after I broke my first one in France a couple of years ago. Can't wait for it to arrive, as I really do miss the old one. I'd forgotten how cheap they are.

I *Heart* Taylor (everybody knows that :D)

New Video, some section looks like shot on DSLR, with time lapse and Tilt Shift effects.

Watch it in Full Screen mode.

I've been contacted by CNN, The Guardian and London24 to use my pictures in their galleries. They're not really published, just linked in online galleries back to my flickr, but it's still nice! :D

Makes me regret not going out with my camera... I could ave got awesome shots from Clapham Junction aftermath and cleanup living just round the corner.

Could you not have picked up a new one whilst you were out. Like some people were.

@explicit4u
Seriously though how did you feel taking shots during a riot.

I'd be torn between getting decent shots and getting mug shots

Fool! Clapham was probably the best place to get shots of the aftermath/cleanup as they had the biggest turn out! Even Boris was there!

I was only taking pictures of the aftermath/cleanup the day after! I was going to go during the riots but I heard that people with cameras were being attacked and decided against it.

Inregards to the riots, I'd actually thought about going down to Highbury Magistrates Court, as it's only down the road from me.

I could snap some of the offenders as they come in and out of court. Ideally though this is the kind of work you would want a newspaper to pay you for and by the looks of the TV pictures, there are already a lot of photographers waiting at the courts.

Camera advice needed,

Ok i'm currently trying to sell my D5000 and the 18-55mm kit lens that came with it and a few accessories ( remote clicker, batterys etc etc )

i know everyone seems to rave about the D90, but it's just not possible on my limp budget, i'm hoping to raise around 400 quid and been hawking the bay place for idea's, and i've come up with either a D200 body or a D80, i've done a little research and both have similar MP to my D5000 but more importantly, they both have that daft screw drive AF so cheaper lenses hopefully, but which one should i go for, i've seen some D200 body's going for around the 250-300 mark which would leave me some dollar for a Cheapy nifty fifty, or the D80 with an 18-70mm lens for around 300-350 any ideas would be appreciated, sorry for the mini essay lol :p

I need a new camera strap :(

The one on my 40d has finally broken, the stitching has come undone and just isn't usable any more. I don't want one of those huge pro-tech jobbies, I like the wrap the strap round my wrist two or three times and I think with a strap with loads of foam and stuff in it won't work too well!

Bit of a long shot but what I'm looking for is a pure material one that has clips or fasteners on that attach it to the camera. I regularly switch from using the battery grip to removing it and having to faff around with the loop fasteners is a bit annoying! If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it :)

Many of you already know your rights but this is may explain them to others.

It's really interesting how these guys were dealt with as I have seen a much more agressive stance by police and security before.

What a result yesterday was!

First off I had a morning wedding du which the couple found me on google, it was a great laugh and a good couple overall!

Then I went and met a couple who were recommended to me via word of mouth, showed them the new sample album which had turned up (I'll post pictures of it later) they then later emailed me to say they loved it and confirmed they would like to book me, album package to!

I've had worse days! :p

Thanks for that Jake :) Congrats on your weddings work too, your photos are getting better and better :)

I think I'll go for the 60D, can afford new so why not. So you think body only, 50mm 1.8 and 70-300 would be a good start? I'll be getting the flash and a tripod too for sure, plus a remote release :)

Any ideas on where to buy? I might as well go brand new, I want to get my initial kit all in one go really and just get into it. Can go nuts tracking down nice glass and other bits as I get in to it :)

You really want something wider than 50mm. You'll struggle with landscapes and day to day stuff like car shots with 50mm as your widest lens.

Potentially being employed by my university as a nightclub photographer and was wondering out of my AF-S 18-55 VR f3.5-5.6 and AF-S 35 f1.8 lens, which would you guys use?

I suppose the first of the two has the plus point of having VR and to go wider than the 35, but the prime lens has better quality glass. If I used the 18-55, would I miss the DOF for single person portraits in a nightclub using a low aperature setting of say f1.8-2.5 compared to a max of f3.5 at 18mm with the other lens?

This is with a Nikon D5100 btw, so 1.5x crop factor plays an important part of it also -.-

Hmmmm, good point. Any suggestions? Would it be worth getting the 18-135 IS kit lens?
