Photography Topic thread...

So I have been swapping and changing hard drives and every time I changed hard drive, I imported the very first catalog. Each hard drive has the same lot of pictures but each one has random new ones. I have about 5 catalogs now... How do I merge them all and delete the duplicates?

Anyway, considering an Olympus C5050 to compliment my film gear, the price is right (used)... and it does seem remarkable for a camera of it's type (and age). Somebody twist my arm :p
 
Bought one of these in black/nickel:

And my god it's worth every penny, it's perfect for the photography I do plus it looks and feels (and smells!) amazing. Despite being pretty loaded up today (Leica M4+50/1.5, Rolleiflex, film, a bottle of water, a paperback, and loads of other little things) it felt great to wear. Tempted to find a bigger Billingham for longer trips abroad where I'd want to carry more gear.

Fantastic bag isn't it? Depectively spacious, I have a D700 with 24-70 on, a 50/1.4 and 70-200/2.8 in there and I can slot a iPad or macbook air in the back too. Sits really nicely on the shoulder too, well designed and made - worth grabbing a shoulder pad for it, makes it nicer for long days out.
 
Sorely tempted to sell my D5100 and get a D700 at some point to get full frame. Should I do this or sell up completely and go canon 5d mk2?

Depends on your needs. The 5DII is cheaper and (decent) Canon glass seems to be about 10-15% less than Nikon at the moment so there's a cost argument. You also get video and far higher resolution. On the other side the the D700 has better AF and marginally better low light performance.

If you're shooting sports or action the D700 is a better camera. If you're shooting landscapes or studio the 5DII is a better camera. Otherwise it'd pick what you like.

You didn't say what glass you have for the D5100, it'll probably be not much good with the D700. It demands good glass and standard zoom wise Nikon don't make much really good glass (you need the £1200 24-70/2.8 basically). Point being - unless you have a 70-200 or similar then 'sticking with nikon' doesn't have massive advantages.

Thanks, looks like I'll have to do some reading. My current nikon gear is as follows:

Nikon D5100
2 official batteries
Nikon SB-900 speedlight
AF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 VR
AF-S 35mm f1.8
16gb 15mb/s SDHC (sandisk ultra) + 8gb 45mb/s SDHC (Sandisk extreme pro)

The SB900 is the only bit out of that which is relevant, both lenses are DX and no use on the D700 (well, they'll work in DX crop mode but that makes it an expensive 5MP DX body) and it won't take SD cards. Batteries are different for good measure.

I'd consider waiting and seeing what comes along next, both the D700 and 5DII are due for replacement fairly soon, they'll be cheaper new or second hand once replacements are announced even if you don't want the latest and greatest.

Also true, I'll wait then and see what comes along, also allowing my savings to grow more lol.

Also you can use DX lenses on FF, you just get some vignetting which you may or may not like.
If you crop off the vignetting your left with a sensor crop factor of about 1.2.

True, yet still not sure if I should actually upgrade to a D700 over a 5dmkii
