I was wondering if Physx is it used much ?

I mean on of the reasons is i look at the nvidia cards is because of the physx, I was wondering is physx a big deal does it get used much ?

so its just a gimmick ?

It is, unfortunately due to its proprietary nature, no developers are interested in using it to a level where it's compulsory to run, instead it's just used for tacked on effects. Aside from that though, another unfortunate use is that sometimes some basic physics effects are removed and then added back in under PhysX and used to exaggerate the difference between PhysX being on and off. In short, it's being used solely as a check box feature in the hope that people feel left out and it compels them to buy.

Gimmick isn't, however there are less than 30 games since 2007 that support it. Also on some is either off today (eg Planetside 2), or you cannot see the difference (eg Hawken).

Unfortunately, the Havoc engine is more widely used.

Physx wasted tech end of story. At least the gpu accelerated side. There's not much info on this but what i found was as old as 2009.

Whats interesting is how used Physx is which i assume was the cpu version mainly. The good games mainly used Havoc where as physx was used in pretty poor games. From this i take that big developers opt mainly for Havoc which is vendor neutral. This data is old but i doubt to much has changed today.

Erm why is every one spouting so much misinformation......

Physx will be in the Witcher 3 game. Not sure about the Xbox one, but the PS4 seems to have physx support.

If you ask me, Physx is a 'gimmicky' as mantle!

Mainly when people talk about Physx they are on about the gpu accelerated side which is Nvidia only. The ps4 only has the Cpu side. Mantle already looks to have more games using it in it's short life compared to Gpu accelerated Physx. Havoc is designed to be used on the Cpu and Physx i believe was originally designed for a ppu. I don't know how good it really is for the cpu so won't comment.

When done correct it looks stunning and tbh one game so far that I have seen and played as done it correct and that's borderlands 2.
Most games just add it into them like Black flag and its smoke pointless tbh

Yeah I would agree it is a gimmick of some sort because its not used much.

Thats all I wanted to know, I use to thing physx will get better and gaming with nvidia should be better but they have not done much with it, so now I can compare amd and nvidia on equal grounds.

Borderlands 2 is the only game I have seen so far that GPU PhysX actually made the game better. The difference between Borderlands 2 with it off and on is huge, I have since learned that it is rarely used or implemented well so isn't a big loss to me now I use AMD.

What i don't get is why Nvidia are hanging so tightly to Physx. It's now not a major selling fact or it should not be as it's barely used by Nvidia gpu's. If they were to open it up to amd they would most likely have it used in a lot of games but it's still there tech so surely they would perform better in the short term at least. They would still control it and where it goes. There main market is the pc so imo they should be helping this market along with this technology.

the should do what nokia does, share it but charge a royalty fee.

I don't even think they should go that far. Tressfx although only used in one game so far is free to Nvidia. Stuff like Physx should be free to further pc gaming end off as its a big market for Nvidia. AMD are supposedly releasing Mantle which in it's first year or 2 looks to be in a lot more games than gpu accelerated physx. Nvidia for me are taking the market for granted which is never a good idea. Consoles are getting more like PC's all the time. I even see the option for keyboard and mouse in a few games. It's time they fight back a little and use the gpu power to show the difference.

Its easy to see for me why Consoles are kicking PC's up and down the place as i like both worlds. There used to be a line drawn between the system as gaming on the 2 was very different. Guess what the consoles are now online and have been for ages and with each generation the support and games is getting close to what the pc can do. 2-3 years after i started gaming Call of Duty was the best FPS shooter i ever played and it was pc only along with the second game. By the time the next gen consoles arrive ie ps3/xbox360 and apart from the pad it was a similar experience. The best of the pc is now available to the consoles but the best of the consoles is not and bar better graphics there's nothing in it. This was never the case back in the day as pc was a different ball game but now its just more graphics with pretty much a stupid price tag to get there. Physx could add more life to a game which the consoles could not match.
