PhysX

Out of curiosity, does battlefield bad company 2 utilise physx? Getting a new gtx 275 card from an rma, wondering wether to hold onto my current 8800gt as a physx card, only other physx capable game i have is medal of honor airborne, which tbh is a bit rubbish.

A bit of research would have told you it does not.

No, it uses Havock as far as I know.

I use a 9800gt with 2 x 4890s. Physx is awesome when it works. The problem is not a lot of games support it. Hey ho.

What's the problem Raven? Surely you are a reverse nvidia fanboy? I have read your comments and conclude you sound like (not are, please don't go moaning to an admin) you are a tool.

Physx is good when it works. ATI has enough ****** problems not to poke fun at nvidia. They have DX11 and nvidia don't but nvidia have beat ATI several times in the past. Surely this is a coke vs. pepsi argument? It'll never end

At the op, yes, you'll see a performance boost but only in games that support Physx. Best £50 I have spent once I got it working tbh

Have fun!

List of supported physx games, none of which the phsyx lover has mentioned are listed..stay down for the count..

Wow, you do seem to have a hidden agenda, and pretty hostile.

Ok, not only is that list out of date, there are games on there that are fully implemented with Physx granted, but there are other games with Physx implementation that may not be GPU supported (From what that list I assume is referring to) but software CPU based implementation of Physx. There are hardware and software variants of Physx.

I thought we were discussing hardware acceleration, or can that be forced on for software variants too? But then again games that use software PhysX are designed in a way so that it's possible to realistically run them on CPUs.

You can sometimes force it to use the GPU by file .ini file tweaking in games, sometimes that has its problems though. Your last part of your post is spot on.

hmm that list is a little out off date saying that

some games only use software physX for one reason or another

only games I know that use it hardware form is brothers in arms hells highway (so it says) unreal tournament 3, mirrors edge, crane sim and a few others

That performance is awful.:o
I doubt anyone with a modicum of impartiality would come to that conclusion. 30% increase in minimum FPS and 20% increase in average FPS should not be dismissed so flippantly.
Though, as it stands the only prominent game that seems to be benefit is Batman AA. So getting a Physx card just for that would not appear to be sensible.

If there any other people like gazjones105 with informative posts then please contribute.

ROFL, add another video card to power mediocre PHYSX effects only and you gain 8 FPS on the min and 9 on the average, you happy with that...keep taking it my son.:o

Those scores are fail anyway as the max fps, 60, is clearly capped so the average FPS is INCORRECT

I've posted this on another topic and, whilst the top link looks a bit dodge, they give you and indiaction of performace when a game really uses it, like batman. We're talking average fps going up from 34fps to 50fps, that's a decent amount.

Ok, after some research:
http://www.egielda.com.pl/?str=art&id=5447-4
Clearly shows that going less that 9800/8800gt is a big mistake, and getting a 9400 gives you WORSE performance.

In this article you can see that using a gtx275 as physx gives you barely better than a gts250 (and by that account, the gts260 will probably be no better). the 250 performs quite a bit better than the 9800GTX.

cheers wam7. these figures might not seem like a lot to raven, but to me..its a very noticable difference. especially where there are physx in parts of batman. the gtx260 alone stutters but with the 9800gt it helps a lot.

i also have vsync on as well so im sure the gains would be more with vsync off.

:) Well, well, well, there is no telling some people but against my better judgment I will try to find an informed way to respond but I suspect that it will be met with the same fatuous and inept response you have given to others. ;)

Minimum Frame Rate
8fps ÷ 23fps x 100 = 34.7% increase
So someone just quoting '8fps is rubbish' makes then sound to most people like a biased... well, I'll let others come to their own conclusions.

Average FPS
9fps ÷ 43fps x 100 = 20.9% increase. Please note that this figure would be much higher if V-Sync did not hold the max FPS at 60fps.

The simple truth is that if one can get a 35% increase in any game they played just by adding a £25 card then the majority of people would do so. This is a similar performance increase you get by going from an Nvidia GTX260 (£138) to an ATI HD5850. (£227)

The reality is that there is only one decent game that shows these benefits, which then renders the whole exercise a little futile.

Your first premise that Physx performance "is awful" I have shown to be totally wrong.
Your second premise that it is only really supported by a few games is correct.

I won't be responding again to your puerile replies.
