Pick up my GT86 tommorow

Love these massively. I went to Toyota to order some parts for my GT-Four. While there the guy had a look round my car and asked if I wanted a drive in their demo. Although a lot slower than my four and less grip the car was great because you can have fun in it without doing stupid speeds not to mention it was quite economical for what it is. Engine also makes a good sound too. Does need a supercharger though. ;)

Nice cars, had a look round one while picking up parts for the Supra, The manager was telling me that the GT86 only narrowly missed ranking up more sales in one month than the Supra did in total :P

You may have preferred your E36 but there is no doubting a car that is at least 13 years newer (22 years newer if you consider when the first E36 was made compared with the first GT86 was made) will have offered things your BMW doesn't.

Not at that price really, apart from perhaps a warranty. To spec if higher than my BMW meant throwing even more £££ at it and frankly it just isn't good bang for buck. By the time you've added a nice interior, a nice paint job and the nav package you're knocking on the door of a very fast 1 series.

EDIT: I should probably rephrase my comment too, it offers nothing to me over my E36. If **** wheels, eco tyres, japanese interiors, engine noise channeled into the cabin by a clever pipe, a digital speedometer, a multi-setting TC system and useless rear seats are your thing then yes, it does offer quite a bit over the E36.

If they offered it at a sensible price then it wouldn't be so bad, but it's grossly overpriced in my opinion.

4 wheels and an engine?

The driving dynamics were very much the same, the engine noise isn't as good, the engine just isn't as good in fact, not as smooth IMO. It was comfortable enough but nothing to write home about.

It' a nice car, but the pricing is just lolworthy IMO. £26k buys you a lot of much nicer cars if you're not one of these 'I must have a brand new car' kind of people.

I would be interested to know what else you would buy new then for £26k?

Obviously an E36 is out of the question as they've not been in production for 13 years.

The cars are mechanically identical apart from spring rates being slightly different.

The choice between the two is based on looks, what deal you can get, and any other additional things like the warranty mentioned above. Underneath they are the same car.

Come towards Farnborough and there's 2 black ones they look amazing.

Nice buy OP fell in love with them when I saw the look of the concept in GT5

Nothing, I think that buying cars brand new is a mugs's game, but that's my personal opinion.

If I had £26k to blast on a used car I'd probably be looking at offerings from porsche or perhaps a high end lotus depending on what was available.

Haa :)

love it :)

maybe once they hit 3 yr old would be tempted if I hadn't just bought a new taxi shed :(

I had a test drive in one of these at the weekend. The road handling was great, however the performance & throttle response of the engine (or lack thereof) was very noticeable when stepping back into my DC5 after the test drive.

Will be a great second-hand purchase, but as above I wouldn't buy one new.

Im also would like to own one at some point when the price drops a little. i have a toyota dealership just a 5 min walk away from me so i usually drive past these most days, and have to say i wasnt very keen on the stripes option with the ones they have in stock, but just been on the toyota website and found a white one with stripes that i really like the look of. thinking the stripes are very colour dependant!

I find it mind boggling they are not offering one with a turbocharged engine, too.

I think TRD are doing a version but it only has about 3bhp more or something - for an additional £5k it stands to be one of the worst value for money cars on the market at the moment IMO.

I do kinda agree with the vfm comments with the M135i being only £4kish more and is faster, better specced, more comfortable, and probably drives better too

Nice one, picked mine up in November and have been greatly enjoying it. Wasn't much good in the snow mind, stranded on the drive for a few days.

Given the cold snap is continuing there is something to be aware of with the windows dropping, or rather when they don't, when opening the doors after a frost (for those unaware they're pillarless doors and drop the window when opening/closing the door).
If the window gets stuck from trying to drop after a frost it'll go in to a bit of a safe mode where the window will drop slightly like normal but then won't return back up, the lights illuminating the window switch on the door should be flashing, if it is, open the windows fully on both sides of the car (using the passenger switch as almost certainly the drivers side one won't work for it). After they're fully opened close them again using all the switches, passenger and drivers side and hold them for about 5 or 6 secs after they've fully closed. Hopefully then the windows should open and close normally when opening the doors and also be able to control the passenger side window from the drivers side again. Quite worried when it first happened as I thought something has broken and it was time for a dealer visit but fortunately not, apparently caused by the window getting 'out of sync' with where it thinks it is.

Will be interested in one of these in a couple of years time I think. They look stunning and like they might be a bloody good laugh.

If Toyota drop a turbo in there it would be tempting.

Don't worry, they wont.

The days of Toyota turbo platforms seems to have died in about 2000, when they seemed to lose interest in sporty editions and transition to econosportsmatic cars.

Just to add my 2ps worth vs the M135i too, list vs list, the standard spec is quite similar between the 2 cars - engine aside, the 135i you seem to get sat nav for nothing, but have to pay extra for keyless entry and vice versa for the GT86, a few other bits but nothing to shout about, of course you could argue about quality, perceived quality etc, again I think that will be *** for tat, better quality materials in the BMW certainly but I'd put a pack of haribo on the one made by Subaru being better in the overall build quality stakes.

List price vs list price there is £5.5k difference, if you start to try and do discounted price vs discounted price I can only go by my own experience which is that I bought my car for 22.5k, 2.5k/10% discount, unsure of what you could get a M135i for but I imagine the delta will still be a similar amount. Will that difference buy a faster car? 100%. Will it buy a better handling/more fun car? Much more subjective and difficult to say, depends on what you plan on doing with it I suppose.

I personally think that there will only be a small overlap in those who will look at both cars seriously, the price difference I believe is still enough of a gulf to see to that.
