Hi guys,

My new Golf is arriving very early compared to plan - the start of next week. The dealer said when I sell the car it would be classed as a 2015 registration but won't have 15 plates and estimated the loss of value impact at £500. Not sure how accurate a statement this is... The plate doesn't bother me but it will probably bother the next owner. I'll also be doing a lot of long range driving in Feb as my brother's baby is due.

Would you wait for the 25ish days or would you pick it up straight away? I'm pretty excited to pick it up.

Thanks

I'd probably wait the month just for the 15 plate. I'd be annoyed getting a 64 and then a few weeks later seeing 15s, but that's me. Are you part-exing and have they agreed the price for it? Is it going to hang on until March (I'm guessing it will if you're buying a new Golf I'd expect you have a reasonable car already). In which case I'd see that month of wearing my old car's tyres etc. as a little saving.

What spec/engine/colour have you gone for? :)

Definitely wait in my opinion. My Fiesta ST will be delivered any time now to my dealer, but I am waiting to pick it up at the start of March, as I would hate having a brand new car on an "old plate" within a few weeks time.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Damn my impatience! ha

What spec/engine/colour have you gone for? :)

3dr Limestone Grey GTD with DSG, Dynaudio Soundpack, Discover Nav, and Park Assist. Really like the dark grey but it's a really common colour so this was next on the list.

I'll be using private plates but the 15 doesn't bother me. Might do the next owner though.

My friend's Golf R is waiting for him at the dealers, but he's waiting until the 1st to get it on a 15 plate, which is what I would also do!

I appreciate others think differently but I'd take it now. I just don't get what difference an 'old' or 'new' plate make. When I'm buying a car I look at the date it was registered and the warranty left etc. in years and months. To my mind the old fashioned changing of numbers once , and now twice, a year is a nonsense. In relation to part ex time I'd be speaking with the salesman based on the age of the vehicle not the plate and any artificial price difference for the sake of a month or so would lead to me going elsewhere.

I normally scoff at people who care about having a higher number on the plate, but since this is a brand new car and you'd only have to wait a month, seems daft not to.

For RVs unfortunately the plate will have an impact. All the guides will work this way and that's what they will use.

Simple fact: plate is important in this market (whether you agree with it or not).

It's probably worth around 5% of the value.

Id take delivery. I took a MK5 GTi for my wife 2 weeks before the new registration and not aware it had any real impact come sale time. Meant she had one of the few 54 plate MK5's on the road :)

...to add I did get 500 quid off it though which no one else was offering on the GTi as it was an in demand brand new model.

I'd wait 7 months for a 65 plate, you'd hate to have a 15 plate car and then see all those lovely 65 plates just a few months later.

Yes because that is the same? If it was still before Christmas I would say don't bother but the fact he is literally 30 days away from the new plate and has no real need for the car right now, it is more sensible to wait.

Looks like I'll be waiting (impatiently!) for it then.

I'll be raking up the miles on my Fiesta at the minute and will be putting another 600 on it in Feb on top of my normal commute (bringing it to 13,500 after a year). Hoping that affects the resale value of the Fiesta less than taking the Golf early. I'm selling the Fiesta privately.

Ha, this has just got a whole lot more complicated for me!

Ford are now offering a further £500 off any car but the car has to be registered by the 28th Feb (so would have to be a 64 plate).

This means i either wait and get a 15 plate put on the car, or get a 64 plate and save £500....

I don't know what to do :(

Trouble is, what if there is an even better offer, or they extend the offer from the 1st March? Then I will be realy peeved as i might have got a further discount AND a 15 plate.
