Just recieved this in an email. Its a nice puzzle and theres a few ways to work it out but its certainly worth the 5 minutes.

Note: Please don't post the answers :)

"A man wanted to get into his work building, but he had forgotten his pin-code.
However, he did remember five clues.

These are what those clues were:
§ The fifth number plus the third number equals 14.
§ The fourth number is one more than the second number.
§ The first number is one less than twice the second number.
§ The second number plus the third number equals 10.
§ The sum of all five numbers is 30.

What were the five numbers?

Surely as per every BBC program ever shown, that should be PIN number code - get it right!!!!!! :D
 
Its not that hard! You just have a series of equations to solve, and the correct answer has been posted
 
I wrote down all of the equations but then just dived into some trial and error using 'e' as the starting point.

Not the sexiest of methods but I got it on my second iteration though!

Actually PIN stands for Personal Identification Number... therefore the extra "code" or "number" is unneccessary...

I'll get my coat...
 
Wouldn't it be quicker to:



Using that, you limit it to only 5 possible combinations. Use the rest of the rules to fill in the rest of it and check the total.

Or alternately, since

the first number + 1 = the second number x 2,

and they're integers (pin code numbers), the first number must be odd and the second even, again giving 5 possible numbers for the first/second digit.

Got it on the 3rd try.
