Pipeline Card Update!

The discounts won't be huge, the retailer only makes about 7p per litre anyway, but even a few pence a litre, over a year, can make a decent saving.

No. A Shell service station makes around half a penny per litre on fuel sales. The majority of profits comes from shop sales and car washes. Fuel costs so much because something like 65p goes to the government, the rest goes into refining the stuff and distributing it.

That specific service station might not, but according to the AA report I got that figure from, the retailer (ie, Shell) make 6.3p a litre.

Just found out about this today so giving it a bump. I don't see what harm it could do signing up, and if it does work ........

Just to let you know...

It will still be April or May before we can send cards out, but these figures will help to give us the negotiating power that we need to get a good discount for everyone.

Best wishes

Yer - obviously.

My mate John Plumber does nothing but connect water pipes all weekend long and plumb in dishwashers.
Another close friend of mine Mike Farmer spends all his days up to his knees in a field feeding sheep.
Peter Baker spends all his evenings making bread.
I'll let you guess what Martin Hooker does when he's had something to eat in an evening....

I'm assuming your post was meant as sarcasm?
It's just that I've seen people post into other Pipeline threads about the guys name and they are being deadly serious.

not sarcasm, was a joke :) sorry you were offended, ive never ventured onto those forums so didnt have a clue.

I signed up. If nothing comes of it I dont care. Not like I have paid for it. If it does go to plan then all the sceptics will eat their words, if not then its not like I have lost anything.

I just dont get where the discount is going to come from. Fuel retail makes almost nothing anyway, there is simply no scope to offer discounts as there is almost no markup to take it from.

Cant see anything happening tbh :/

Agreed, there is little to no scope for any form of discount of more than say, a couple of pence a litre.

I buy about 9200 litres a year for my van, a 2p saving would see better off by £184 pounds a year. (which i get on my bunker card anyhow)
If the prospect of saving £1 a tank of fuel floats your boat, then its worthwhile doing.

now im not being funny

but if a petrol co. wanted to increase the number of customers/market share why wouldnt they just drop the price of petrol at the pumps? if they really wanted to reduce their own margins and gain incremental revenue wouldnt they have just done this years ago?

why would a card make any difference to this?

one like this is already up and running in Holland, so they do work.

Don't forget, petrol forecourts are now just like 10p tins of beans and 19p loaves of bread - a way to get people into your shop. Did you know a garage cannot be licensed to sell intoxicating liquour? Well, by law, it can't. A few years ago (last time I was in licensing court) I heard a solicitor argue, on behalf of Total that they were a shop that sold petrol and that less than 50% of their their turnover was petrol.

Sure enough, the license was granted. This will tickle the likes of shell - 300k coustomers, possibly 50% of those will be non-customers and considering the industry now gets less than 50% of it's sales from petrol, that's a lot of sweeties they can sell on!!!

new update recieved yesterday afternoon

Dear Pipeline Card Member,

Pipeline Card has been going since November and some of you are clearly getting
fed up - and not just with the continual fuel price rises.

Emails are coming in every day saying "When are the cards coming?" "How many
members do you need now? and "Why the delay"? Well guess what - we're
frustrated too!

Nothing like this has ever been done in the UK before - it's not going to happen
overnight. The petrol discount scheme they set up in Holland took around 18
months to get off the ground. I can certainly tell you that we all want this to
work as much as you do - we have spent a lot of time and effort on it. There is
a big gap between an agreement in principle and a finalised contract - but we
are gradually overcoming some of the difficulties and we are getting closer.

I would like to be able to give you much more information but, unfortunately, we
are bound by a non-disclosure agreement that carries a hefty financial penalty.
So I can't even tell you who we are negotiating with. All I can say for now is
that we are making progress, we are still hopeful of an announcement in the next
couple of months, and we still need your support.

It is just possible that we will need to consider a different way of achieving
our goal but the good news is that we have already been approached by another
organisation who is interested in working with us.

There is other good news too. Thousands of our members have saved money on
domestic heating oil this month and others have saved money on gas and
electricity by using our price comparison service. It's not our main purpose,
but it is a way of giving something back while our negotiations continue.

Over 9,000 blogs and websites are linking to us and our media support is still
growing. So please keep telling people about us.

Rest assured; we are not going to lose sight of what Pipeline Card is all about.
It's about all of us paying less for our petrol and diesel. We are definitely
not going to do any deals with marketeers and spam merchants; and we are not
going to give up.

That's it for now. Watch out for us on Fifth Gear - the Channel 5 motoring show
- at the beginning of next month.

Don't forget that you can recommend Pipeline by clicking here
http://www.PipelineCard.org/recommend.html and you can resign as a member at any
time by sending a blank email to [email protected].

Best wishes

Yeah whatever

I signed up for this ages ago and now I'm starting to think it's a huge wind up. Nothing ever happens other than every few months I get an email saying "please bare with us, it's coming soon" etc.
