Pipex accused me of copyright theft

I only dissagree with the people who sell off cheap pirated movies and make a quick profit from it.

Any update Dogbreath on this?

Not as yet. I have sent 4 replies to the email address indicated in the first email I received ([email protected]) and all four have bounced back with the message:

"RT could not load a valid user, and RT's configuration does not allow for the creation of a new user for your email."

Pipex are just the most useless bunch of cretins ever, should have left them months ago really. I've now forwarded original email and reply to [email protected], for all the good it will do. Interesting that the powers that be just grab IP's from a tracker without actualy checking what they are doing, but doesn't explain how mine was obtained as I just don't use BitTorrent (actualy having read the full article, seems I could quite easily have clicked on a tracker link without even knowing it!).

Something that did surprise me though; the thought of my wireless being hacked was a little worrying, but as I could only pick up a few networks localy I'd never really considered it very likely. However I've always been interested in making a "Cantenna" so knocked one up a couple of days back and modified an old PCMCIA card to give an external connection. Sweeping around out of my bedroom window gave 51 access points and peer-peer connections, 19 of which were apparently unsecure! This is good and bad, obviously a lot more wireless users than I thought within range, but also a considerable number of unsecured connections that would make the excercise of cracking my own connection a little pointless.

To be honest if your not using wireless disable it. I, for one see little point in a desktop PC having wireless internet unless you said you had a laptop, that's a different matter. I'd secure the network and check who's on the router every-so-often.

Shouldnt that be

"SERVING YOUR TIME BY MIGRATING TO AOL?"

LOL

Cant fault AOL service really, migration was 7 days.. 300k currently on utorrent with 20k upload/ able to surf fully without lag also..... havent heard of any caps/or any signs of p2p throttles yet could max out my line at around 600-650ish k which I thinks good for my crappy line also.

Oh and monthly contracts/no AOL software just hooked direct to my linksys 125 wireless router kit.

And then when AOL start introducing the caps/throttles then ill be in AOhell ;)

The Internet Service as such is good, I will give it that but...

AH?

So, this is true then?

You dont need the stupid Cripple-ware software anymore then?

I assume this is only with a router though?

My mother you see is on AOL and she has that goddam awful software and has nothign but hell with it!!!

She needs an F&R and if a router will sort her out, I will happily thrown one at her, and FnR her box ( Pardon? )

don't worry about not being able to get your MAC in the future when you want to move isp after you get your apology, Ofcom are bringing into force new rules starting on the 14th FEB for isp's that they are required to give you your MAC code on request and they can't charge you for it.

I am struggling with Tiscali because of slow broadband speeds for the past month. Will they give me a mac code tomorrow even if I have 6 months to run on my contract?

An isp will give you a mac code for free however if you are still within a contract they are entitled to charge you a fee for breaking it.

I just got a mac code off tiscali even though I have 8 months to run on my contract. I have to pay up the rest of the term though. Tempted to cancel my direct debit.

Does the mac code stay with you no matter who you are with?

Cos a whiel back, I got a mac code off BT when they tried charging me £400 for going 2k ( Slight lie ) over my given limit and I was given an option of payign up of moving elsewhere... They were surprised when I simply told them to eff off.

Anyway, I had my mac somethign like 2 years ago and I still got it written down in my notes.

Yes, I found the accompanying letter and it does state that in the letter.

Thanks for confirming it though!

I got to admit though... I am very happy with my ISP.

I have my Phoneline, 8MB unlimited unmetered uncapped Broadband, free evening and weekend calls, plus any 3 number of my choice at 100% free 24/7 and these are mine and the missus' Mobiles and my mums phone too, are all setup as the free number, and my bill have never gone over £47 in the last 2 years.

I did have issues at first with having an asian helper on the desk who I was completely unable to communicate with, but they have now moved the help desk to the UK ( Wahay! ) although I have not needed them since then, its good to know.

Good value for money actually I think.

I have just recieved an email from Pipex accusing me of downloading Warhammer: Mark of Chaos via Bit Torrent at the end of last month. Now whilst it would be hypocritical of me to say I have never broken any copyright with the odd MP3 or episode of Lost etc. I am 100% not guilty of the crime they are accusing me of. Not only do I never use Bit Torrent, I also don't play Warhammer, its just not the kind of game that appeals to me.

I've written a snotty email back explaining they have made a mistake and that I would like an apology, but realisticly I don't suppose it will happen. Has anyone else had this problem?

I personally would tell them to sod off. In reality nothing will ever come of this whether you downloaded the torrent or not - Ps if you are guilty use PeerGuardian next time!!!! (Not that I in any way condone copyright infringement  )
But I would also change my ISP anyway, as you may become a victim of Port throttling in the very near future

I do have wireless, but it's pretty well locked down. I don't broadcast the SSID, I have an IP filter for wireless access and run WPA encryption. Nothing that would stop a determined attacker of course, but there are far easier targets nearby...

DAMN there goes my free broadband. ;)

The problem here isnt really innocent until proven guity, because all the evidence does in fact prove you are guilty... Or at least the IP is guity and that you are in total control of that IP.

Not true. I'm currently with Be, and was on their forums yesterday where some guy was also sent the same letter (copyright infringement ...). He however, insisted that he had purchased a modem on a date AFTER the infringement occured and he used IP Chicken to find out what his address was when he plugged it in. He claimed that the IP had never changed since and remains the same to this day.

Guess what? Two days later Be* actually apologised (by telephone! and on the forums) about getting it wrong somewhere, and that the IP actually belonged to someone else.

So if your 200% certain that you didn't download said material, I'd say stick your guns (maybe also keep them loaded under your pillow, with a warning on your front door :D ).

Ok, thats fair enough, but he was able to prove his innocence, and such proof as this is, is irrefutable, so in his case, he was fine.

Is this also the case for the OP?

Ok, here's the deal, RIAA could feasibly sue an ISP for a huge amount of money if they refused to pass on letters such as this to users. So they pass them on and let the users deal with it.

It's not anything to do with pipex or anyone else, it's the only sensible move for an ISP to pass on these notices when requested. So it doesn't matter who you're with...
