Piracy - Today's Discussion

I don't pirate games. I buy everything and pretty much only via steam. If the game comes with silly DRM I just don't buy it.

5 years ago I think I might have been more tempted to pirate stuff. Now, I just can't see any reason to.

The only sad thing is that you have to really look into the game and go into viewing the game protection it has before you can buy a game. Games like TDU2 come with limited activations, which I find absolutely appalling. Why the hell can't I, the person whose bought the game, install it a million times if I want?

It's companies such as Ubisoft, EA, etc. who thinks that piracy only exists on the PC and that the consoles are the saving grace - in reality it's actually rife on every platform.

As some-one who is (amazingly) new to Steam, it's awesome! Fired it up, bought Borderlands GOTY for $7.49 which downloaded overnight and off we go today - with ease of access and deals like that it's literally not worth pirating and all the hassle that comes with.

I agree with this. Well said Sir :)

I played it, it made me feel sick I changed the FOV I still felt sick I then got bored and tired of running back and forth. I wish i'd pirated it and saved the money :p

Gabe has it spot on, the success of Steam confirms this.

Too bad companies such as Ubisoft and EA and too naive to realise this.

Just think of all the money they are wasting on this DRM / Anti-piracy rubbish, not to mention paying customers who are put off from purchasing.

No wonder why people pirate games.

STEAM is a form of DRM wrapped in a packaging that makes most people not realise this.

Mine is pricing then quality. If games are cheap then I will buy. I try the "extended demo", if i don't enjoy it, or its **** quality then I won't buy or play it. If its good, then I'll look for it in the sales.

Eg:

- Cheap game & **** quality = no purchase.
- Cheap game & good quality = purchase.
- Expensive game & **** quality = no purchase.
- Expensive game & good quality = no purchase.

Simple really, its all about value for money. I generally purchase in sales, or special offers/discounts.

I generally have a purchase ceiling of about £20. £30+ is ridiculous. My only exception was Guild Wars 2. It was sub free MMO, so I know it will be value for money in the long term.

It is simple, more people will buy at a lower cost.

This is exactly why Steam is great. It is a form of DRM that seems like a benefit to the majority of legitimate customers rather than something that just gets in the way of paying customers and isn't an issue for pirates.

its no different than origin though but for some reason some people like steam and think origin is evil drm :S

Steam was around before Origin so it beat it to the punch..that's probably the main reason.

Also, Origin is associated with EA (typically seen as an "evil corporation") whereas Steam is associated with Valve (typically seen as "omg, I love you guyyyssss").

A lot of it is about perception and some of it is due to Origin still having a long way to go to catch up to Steam.

Personally I found Origin annoying as I had to get it for BF3. When I first "had" to get Steam for HL2 I found that quite annoying too. A few years later though and I swear by it. It will be interesting to see if the same happens with Origin (I doubt it personally).

I was totally against ubi but the rayman origins came out. What a gem with no drm, its put them slightly higher in my books.
