So taking my lady up to Glasgow this Tuesday, thought I'd ask on here for good, affordable places to eat in the city centre (or maybe a short cab ride).

Been a good few years since I've been home, and was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations.

Also got a 2-4-1 paypal meal voucher code thingy, has anyone got one of these and used it yet?

Cheers in advance for replies :D

The butchershop bar & grill, tuesday night deal gets you steak with a garlic herb butter, skinny fries and a bottle of house wine, for two, for £30.

I like the ubiquitous chip when I'm going to glasgow, whether that is classed as affordable I don't know.

Got ourselves booked into the butchershop tomorrow evening, seems a nice place to unwind after a day on trains. Might try ubiquitous chip another night cash and time depending.

Just to add something:

City Merchant - Game/Seafood sort of thing, very good. Pretty traditional but with a modern twist.
Gamba - Glasgow's best bet at getting a Michelin star I reckon. Seafood, quite pricey but the food is fabulous and the service is also terrific.
Mussel Inn - Seafood, good value. Nice and relaxed, big portions. Yummy.
Cafe Gandolfi - Traditional, good food. It's quite pricey, but not that bad. Small, intimate, quirky even. Food is terrific though. They have a fish restaurant a few doors up with I think is style over substance, the cafe is always heaving though.
Mother India Cafe - Indian, tapas style. Best Indian in Glasgow, hands down.
Chow - Chinese, tiny and pretty informal but the food really is amazing. If it was bigger, then it would be a really outstanding Chinese but it's just that bit small that it's good for a quick dinner but not really a meal out.

Let me know how it is please, planning on going there for my birthday dinner. Heard good things about it.

We ate at the butchershop a month ago and it was fantastic.

I had pork belly to start, house cut (medium) with fries and finished with the cheesecake. She had parmesan crisp with goats cheese, house cut (medium) with fries and finished with sticky toffee pudding.

To accompany the main we had onion rings and 'slaw.

For drinks I had an old fashioned at the start of the meal and fnished off with a rob roy, she had a Daiquiri and ended with a bellini. I forget the wine we had.

Writing that out has me salivating :D

It really was excellent, helped by knowledgeable, friendly and attentive staff.

The following night we ate at '3 sisters'. As good as it was I would rate the Butchershop slightly higher. It probably didnt help that the sisters was boiling hot and in the end i just wanted to leave.

Good to hear. I've eaten in The Grill On The Corner before and I wasn't that impressed with it. The Butchershop seems a little less well known (hardly any of my mates have ever heard of it) and looks nicer which could be a good thing.
Having a look at the menu, would you say £40-£50 pp is a decent enough budget? Need to convince my pals to come so will need to give them a rough idea (obviously a lot of it depends on how many cocktails and how much wine we drink...)

If you go on a tuesday, you'll easily do that. On a normal night , yeah that should be achievable. Our bill was £150, tho now i think about it, we had 2 bottles of wine!

Its well worth it though, steak was excellent. Couple near us had the chateaubriand and it looked fantastic. The lass was unsure so they brought the cut out and explained it to her.

It'll be a Saturday, unfortunately. Though I might go on a Tuesday soon though because it seems such good value.

I'll just tell my friends to factor in at least £60 for dinner and some drinks there and see what happens. Would love to try chateaubriand but think it's a bit pricey for me.

You can come to my birthday if you want. :)

Man, that would be awesome. Unfortunately its a 150 mile round trip for me.. and there is no way i'd manage to do it without having a bevvy :D

If 2 of you go on the chateaubriand then its actually bloody good value I would say.

I'm back home this Friday and keen to try this Butchershop from this thread now, whereabouts is it?

There are absolutely loads of nice places to eat in Glasgow, I can't remember half the ones I've been to. Lots of lunch-time or pre-theatre cafes and stuff.

It's on Sauchiehall Street, but up Kelvingrove way. Do you know where the bowling green and tennis courts are at Kelvingrove park? It's opposite that.

Aye 1055 Sauchiehall street, 20 min walk from the busier end with all the bars.

Got back earlier from Glasgow, good trip! Thanks for the other options/ideas guys couldnt check my web as I was so busy when I was up there.

Butchershop (even though we went for cheapy Tuesday Frites £30 deal) treated us very well, we had a couple of drinks in the bar as the walk was much shorter than we anticipated. Either they forgot to bill me for the drinks or gaves us them on the house, should've ordered a more expensive drink!

Waiters were in good spirits, and treated us very well (I said that already, doh) even offered me to try the house wine before pouring, very unheard of, as when i worked in waiting, you were never really expected to do that with the house wine, as its expected to be cheapy.

Steaks were lush, like 2 inches thick, and the GFs very rare one, im sure if you stared at it still had a heart beat and a MOO echoed off of it.

Dessert we had, cheese platter, even gave us extra crackers/oat cakes as we were sharing. So aye good night, would recommend it to anyone wanting to show off good dining to anybody not from Glasgow :D

Can't get a table for the right time in the Butchershop for my birthday. :( There needs to be more steak houses in Glasgow! Grrr.

I'd heard a lot of good things about the Ubiquitous chip, but when I tried it I didn't think it came anywhere near the hype. It was ok, but nothing special imo.

Might go back and give it another try though, and see if my opinion can be swayed.

I'm the same div0. Just not wonderful, though haven't been in 2 or 3 years.

Going to The Dhabba on the 26th, been a few times. And it's a good place for a curry, will be a large group of us though so hopefully that doesn't cause them bother!

you should try the lorne hotel for a curry, also the corinthian is really nice for a meal, as well as paperino's on byres road.

Is the Lorne good? Never heard of it! How much are mains? Doesn't have a copy of the menu on the website. I haven't confirmed at the Dhabba yet (gotta put down a deposit) so my choice is open to other suggestions. Never been particularly fond of hotel restaurants though, they just seem to 'meh' most of the time (bar the ones at 5* places).

Edit - Reading some reviews, the service is apparently awful. I can't stand bad service, no matter how good the food is. I'll bear it in mind and maybe suggest it to my curry loving pal if we're in the area (though with Mother India, which I love, so close it might never get my custom...). Don't think I'll risk it for my birthday though. The Dhabba is my favourite curry house in Glasgow, so will stick with that.
It's a bit odd that I haven't been able to find a truly fantastic Indian in Glasgow, there's one or two in Aberdeen (Jewel in the Crown, I'm thinking of you!) but nothing of the same calibre in Glasgow.
