Plane stolen by ‘suicidal’ airline worker crashed as fighter jets pursued it outside Seattle

Starting them up is pretty easy especially if it has an electric start. It would not take a huge amount of effort to get it moving. Larger Aircraft that require air start or APU starts are a bit more complicated and difficult if on your own.

he could have landed it if someone told him what speed etc he should have and altitude, maybe the plane even can land itself some planes can do that, maybe not the smaller ones though

few years in jail then and a Hollywood movie, all the interviews on TV, he'd be rich when he got out.

I'd imagine the Q400 has a full autopilot including landing ability - though setting it up is another matter.

EDIT: At the very least it normally has ILS but actually using it would still need instruction and probably experience.

Plus they probably would have jailed him in a psych ward I assume.....not regular jail. Be an easy stretch of time potentially (As least compared to regular).

It has localiser and Glideslope available to the autopilot but I don’t think the chap was really interested in any of that tbh.

Hard to tell really - he sounds in atleast two minds about it - I'm not really sure he'd made a decision while talking on air but I'm guessing by the end he probably had.

We were on board a BA 747 ready for take-off from Seattle when the pilot told us we weren't moving as a plane had just been stolen and airspace had been closed. Fortunately we were in the comfy seats with wine and a movie, and it wasn't long until airspace was open again as he'd flown south.

Very sad situation for Richard Russell.
