Planet Earth II

This show is pure class...

Wind it in you sofa critics who actually think they have a valid opinion.

The arrogance of some people on here and the lack of knowledge of what it takes to make TV of this quality is just laughable.

I respectfully disagree, I thought it had a great mix of beautiful visuals, a bit of humour (the bobcat faceplanting was great!), and never before seen footage of snow leopards interacting.

This series was always going to have a tough time competing with the original as that was truly groundbreaking, nevertheless I'm very much enjoying it.

So Planet Earth 2 is not ground breaking?

OMG Just OMG!

Not what I said but I wouldn't say it's as groundbreaking as the first. Planet Earth 1 was the first time a major nature documentary was shot and broadcast in HD and was by far the most expensive and ambitious nature series made at the time. I realise that PE2 is shot in 4k but as yet it is not being broadcast in it.

In addition, we have had some extraordinary series from the BBC nature unit since PE1 such as The Hunt, this certainly doesn't detract from PE2 but naturally people become used to the quality of spectacle they are presented with. Due to that I don't think PE2 has the same impact of PE1, that's not to say I respect the work of the production team any less.

I wasn't impressed with the paragliders fail efforts and ultimate goal.
This show is supposed to show us nature, not our interpretation of how it looks to fly like an eagle. The beeb payed them to heliski and paraglide off mountains.
Great work if you can get it, I image they're still chortling to themselves at getting paid to play (and fail).

It is what happens when we have so many David Attenboroughs in our midst. :D

Back to the program...

The ibex sequences were very good and the eagles fighting over the food was superb. I could have done with another half hour of those amazing mountain panoramas.

How did they fail? They ended up doing it in tandem so one of them could hold the camera steady and these shots were used in the episode.

another spectacular episode, the balance and dexterity those ibex have.

and the actual flying kicks from the eagles.

don't understand the criticism or the how it was filmed segment.

4 wild snow leopards on camera at once and those eagles fighting it out, was quite something. Another great episode.

Also, Bobcats are cool.

Really enjoyed last nights episode. Was it as good as the first? Probably not, but it will take something very special to beat a swimming sloth, snakes v lizard and ballsy penguins.

Jungles next week though so this could well be the best one yet!

Get over it. Attenborough himself is on record as saying "If I was earning my money by hewing coal I would be very glad indeed to stop. But I'm not. I'm swanning round the world looking at the most fabulously interesting things. Such good fortune."

And we're invested in watching him do so. Did you learn anything new about eagles from the paragliders?

No. Did I learn anything new about penguins from the diary bit last week? No. Thsts not what the segment is for. It's for learning about how they made the show.

So much hate for the making-of "planet diaries" bit

I enjoy seeing how things are made, especially when the final product is so spectacular. A bit like watching a good movie and wondering how they pulled off a particular shot or a special effect... it's intriguing.

Does it cut in to the final product? Not in my opinion, they simply made an editorial decision to fit it to the 45 mins US format and included a bit extra at the end for the UK audience. They've shot hours of footage, including a few extra minutes could be easily achieved if they wanted.

Back on topic: after the premier episode being good a whole episode about mountains was always going to be lesser in comparison. If they'd showed mountains for the premiere then the audience would have dropped... damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I'm not against the diaries. My point is that the paragliders didn't add anything to the show other than human interpretation of eagle flight. Unless I missed it, they didn't film any eagles, just sailed down a mountain a couple of times trying to emulate them.
The people filming the penguins were the ones who provided us with the footage.

The guy with the DSLR on his head didn't get useable footage but they did when they did the tandem paragliding. Plus the helicopter got good footage, so really it was only the single man paragliding that was "wasteful".
