Hey guys

I am looking into components for my new PC.

I havent looked at parts for a couple of years as i spent a load on my current pc and just left it at that.

I currently run a 4.0 clock i7 920 on a asus p6t with 3gb dominator ram, using a ati 5850 and run a 40gb intel ssd (early one)

I also have full water cooling which i added later on.

I am looking at a total rebuild, every component new. however I dont know what to go for or the costs involved.

Can anyone recommend me what I should be looking at brand and model wise?

Thanks and I can provide any more information needed

Whats the main uses for this PC?

ah cant believe i missed that.

Primarily gaming, general PC usage and university work.

I like to do over clocking as well so something with a lot of room for modifications etc

also need something a little more compact than my CM Cosmos case as its proven difficult to transport it between houses when at uni especially with a triple rad attached,

thanks, looks a little under budget (i know i didnt specify originally) and dosent look like it would be faster than my current pc. I can probably do over 2K total cost though im more interested in info on what parts are good than a total build list. I know my way around after this being my 5th self build but just dont know chip sets, good ssd's etc etc after 2 years out the loop.

also i want to keep watercooling since its been far better than air

Thanks for your time!

what about if we forget about gaming and just go for overkill then?

I like to overclock though am not a pro by any means so that requires more serious hardware, its just these builds seem only marginally better than my current pc of 2 years, has the tech really not come on much in that time?

hmm fair point. how well do the OC? and is socket 2011 the one to go for now? still use tri channel ram?

Well its a K CPU (unlocked multiplier), the Gigabyte board despite costing just £145 managed some world records back in December - http://hothardware.com/News/Gigabyt...terates-X79-Overclocking-Record-with-F7-BIOS/

The SB-E are the best Intel have currently (except xeons) the socket will also get Ivybridge-E later in the year/next year, but then theres another CPU/Socket called Haswell coming next year.

They have a quad channel memory controller for extra bandwidth (but can also run just a pair in dual channel)

But as before, for gaming its OTT

Im a big fan of OTT so will probably go with quad.

Ill do some research of my own but thanks for providing the background info

The hardware part fo that is good:)

Im not so clued up on separate water cooling fixtures etc (im more of a kit/closed loop water cooler man myself)

yea im good with the water part been running water 2 years now.

My mate said swap the ati for the nvidia equivalent and do for an ivy bridge with dual channel ram and a different mobo. good advice or no?

Why not get a slightly cheaper motherboard/processor combo, ditch the WC and get a 690 when they are in stock?

That's a neat way to bust over £800 on a GPU, after all.

because i like water cooling over air and im happy with the cost of the mobo and cpu at the moment, dont need a totally mega graphics card as that only benifits games

Theres no right or wrong way of speccing this when you want to go overkill.

yea but theres still a best set of components
