Plasma is dead !!

This is a shame imo, the quality of picture on a large LCD is much worse than a plasma for standard def, which lets be honest is still what most of us watch 90% of the time. I wouldnt swap my plasma for a LCD.

I read two things they wont be making there own panels and now sourcing Panasonic panels to put in there Plasma. And i have also read they are dropping Plasma altogether and going to LCD.

It a shame but was going to happen at end of day prices of Pioneer Plasmas are way to high compared to that of Panasonic. They could have reviewed strategy and made cheaper panels to compete but they would tarnish reputation they made i guess. They maybe better screens but end of day most people will sway to Panasonic due to price they are marketed at its a shame but way it is.

I wonder whats going to happen to Plasma 2.0 they was touting at CES seems abit strange they got behind this now pulling out market it looks like. I beleive meeting is happening this friday maybe we will find out more then.

Oh man, I only recently learned that Pioneer Kuro's are one of the best screens available today!
...why do I seem to be disappointed? I'm confused dot com
Lol

I'm gonna start stock-piling Kuros.

I'm all for sports people retiring at the top of their game, but this is terrible news. I now which I'd gone for the LX50 instead of the 42xd

It's not THAT much worse, comparing my LCD to my parents Panasonic Viera anyway, it's better though that's for sure.

Which models?

I've yet to see an LCD that i would pick over a CRT, including the Sony X-Series. They are fine for gaming and PC use, but I just wouldn't use one as a TV.

I went out, I did the compares.
When I did compare I found that the LCD I decided on offered blacks nearly as good as a plasma.
Everything else about the display was excellent and I'm extremely pleased I went the LCD route rather than the plasma one.
It's a shame that plasma didn't impress me that much as it would have been a cheaper option.

Yeah, the Sammy LCD I bought last year - rivals all but the very top end plasmas for black levels.

im not sure what plasma's you werre looking at but honestly, lcd's just dont touch them. i have my sony 40w's backlight right down on 1 when im watching with the lights off, it's still an average performer with black detail. its one of the best lcds, but its still not good enough. my aging old 24" PYE tv is bettter at the dark stuff, and thats no exaguration.

From what I've heard pioneer won't stop making plasma tv's or panels, but rather will focus their glass on the higher end 50" plus models and source panasonic glass for the 42"ers. Panasonics economies of scale are just too good for pioneer to compete on price, so by using panasonic glass for their entry level options pioneer can compete in that marketplace (where panasonic make virtually al their profits) whilst also focussing their own glass on the higher end, higher margin screens.

If anything you will see pioneer expand their range - but will lose future 42" kuros

Misleading title to the thread and story. Pioneer will still make plasma's, just that they will use Panasonic panels in the same way that Sony have been using Samsung and are now switching to Sharp.

Im with you james. Even the x3500 sony had poor black levels compared to the panasonic and especially the kuro I saw.

Went home at the weekened and my parents toshiba 42X3030 had what looked like greys and not blacks. I even configured the tv in the service menu when we got it and improved the picture. LCDs really don't compete with plasmas yet for quality.
