Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Treated myself to a Forerunner 220 for my birthday. Went for a run with it tonight and it took a long time to get a GPS signal, long enough that I got fed up and started running anyway (had my iphone on my arm and that seems to pick up gps a lot faster) so my data is a bit messed up but when it did get gps the data from that point on is pretty much identical to the nike+ data from the phone. I think its supposed to pick up GPS a lot quicker next time as it saves the satellites or something? Doesn't really help that I live in a built up area in the city I guess.

Also bought myself a pair of Jaybird Freedom Sprint Bluetooth headphones which seem to be really good so far.

From what I've read it is suppose to find a signal pretty damn quick and a lot quicker than previous versions. I had a Forerunner 205 until I lost it around a month or so back and I'm currently looking at buying the 220.

I'd hope that it was just a one off and next time you use it the signal will be much better. Let me know how you get on with it.

My bike GPS can take a while, I turn it on and leave it by a window while I get ready. Not ideal but a solution none the less.

Waiting for my wife to get home then I'm going for a run, 5kish and then a quick jaunt on the bike to stop my legs seizing up!

Well I put in on the balcony tonight whilst I did my stretches and it picked up a gps, lost it again when I brought it back inside but only took a few seconds to find it again when I went outside. Going to try leaving it on standby till I run tomorrow rather than turning it off completely as I have been doing and see if that makes any difference

It gave my run distance today as 6.05km vs 6.14km from my phone and 6.15km from plotting on mapmyrun.

The bluetooth syncing has worked without issue so far

New Garmin Connect is go! I just got the message and clicked the option to switch to the new platform. Seems pretty impressive so far, looks pretty and seems a bit snappier than old Connect (which only took a performance hit when they have been switching people over tbh).

a lot of the home screen widgets are still showing as coming soon though so it's stll a big work in progress. A calendar on my home page would be good but can't have that yet so looking forward to the new features being introduced along the way.

That is probably the reason it's taking so long to get a lock. The battery will last weeks in standby mode; there's no need to turn it off completely unless you're not going to use it for weeks at a time :)

Also, five weeks until the Edinburgh marathon and I am getting nervous. I haven't run further than 13 miles yet, so I am going to have to make sure I take advantage of the Easter weekend and get out there for a decent long run.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but 78 pages is too many to trawl through. I'm about to start the Runner's World 24-week training plan which calls for walk/run intervals.

Is there an iOS app that allows you to listen to music in the background but has a countdown timer which you can set for the walk/run intervals and bleeps at each interval? Many thanks.

There are a series of NHS podcasts which get you running from scratch with the woman telling you when to start/stop running but I couldn't manage them as I'm so unfit. :D

This is the run from last night (GPS failed on Tuesday!!). http://www.strava.com/activities/131220835

Last week I had to stop ever mile as I was pushing too hard so this pace is a lot better for me, I'd still like to crack the 7min/mile barrier, my legs weren't very fresh yesterday (10 mile bike TT route wed) so hopefully next Tuesday I'll be quicker.

Any training tips from you guys? I'm just doing 2 x 5k runs a week, should I be doing sprints or some kind of interval training too?

I have two running mates who have done track sessions before and found there speed improved quite a bit afterwards.

Yes.

In a couple of weeks I think I'll build some in, I want to get comfortable with the 5k distance first and start adding some more distance. I actually look forward to run days, odd!

And to add, to be comfortable with 5k, you probably need to be running for 7k in any case.

I'm hoping that no one who would like to enter forgets but the ballot for the London Marathon opens tomorrow.

It closed in only 11 hours last year so it must be done first thing!! I believe it actually opens at midnight.

I got up extra early in order to enter the ballot. I hope the winter training top they send out to unsuccessful entries is better than the windshirt they sent out last year!

I waited up til gone midnight to enter the ballot.

turns out they don't open it til the morning

got my name in now though :)

Gotta beat this years slow 'un 4hrs 55 mins (1st marathon and hadn't run for a month before, injured)

Indeed, I entered at around 12.25.

Hoping everyone got in, amazing how quickly it closes.

The training top does actually look better than it usually does. I have the one from last year and it's rubbish, that said I have mine signed by Haile Gebrselassie though. :D

I was up til 12.10 last night and it hadn't opened.

flicked over to the London Marathon Facebook page and someone had mentioned it opened at 6am.

Checked at half six and it was, registered when I got to work at 8am. Lucky really as it closed fairly soon after :)

Fingers crossed we all get a place.
