Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

I just used to run in a pair of Ronhill Classic GT Tracksters when it was cold.

Starting to get back to it again myself now after being off for 9 months whilst I renovated my house & the missus had a baby! Lost tons of strength as well as cardio so is going to be really tough starting again.

Any tips for starting again from scratch? I've a gym induction tonight and planning to use that for strength work & stretch stuff mainly to start with. I'll throw in a couple of spin/circuits & short jogs to start getting some cardio back and then in 8-10 weeks I'd start running 3-4 times a week and really building up the miles.

Any other tips for getting back on the wagon?

Nike Tech & Filament tights are good (or addidas supernova or similar). Don't be a shorts over tights guy, nobody wants to be that guy.... Neither of those tights are thermal, pretty light, if it's REALLY cold then you can wear a pair of compression underwear such as under armour or Nike Pro. I feel the cold BIG time and I get away with just tights mostly but when it's very cold just use compression underwear and never felt the need for anything warmer.

Andyt_uk - Routine, routine, routine. If you get yourself into the frame of mind that gym/running is part of your every normal day, it will all come so focus on that first rather than specific plans and stuff. For running just give it a bash and see how much fitness you have lost and then assess. Either right back to walk/jog routine or start with a 5 min jog and build up. There is no point on taking on mental plans or ways forward at this point, build a routine and just get into a habit with your exercise and it all comes with consistency.

Ah ok thanks for the heads up. Is shorts over tights a bit of a no-no in the running community then? Didn't realise it was a big deal. I ended up going for some Nike Element thermal tights - they look a bit thicker and the zip pocket on the back would be ideal for an ipod or similar:

Oh nice, maybe they rebranded these are exactly the tights I was thinking of when I wrote the post. I have a pair exactly like that, maybe mines are slightly thinner as I wouldn't say mines are thermal but have the same mesh on back of knee's and the pocket which is handy so you've bought a great pair there, they'll be spot on

Shorts over tights, just ignore it's more of a joke than anything. In America it is more of a deal the guys tend to wear shorts over tights when running high school as they're still a bit worried about being seen in tights and they start poking fun at guys who continue to do it into later age. It's just a silly pastime joke ;)

Final race of the year for me today. Stockport 10 Mile.

Came in at 1.10.15. Happy with the time considering I had a work Xmas night out last night and didn't wake up feeling great or sleep much for that matter. Will be doing it again next year to see how much I can take off prepared better. :)

Good stuff IG.

Clocked a new 10k PB at Outlon Park on Sunday - 47:07. Killer head wind in places and being a small field (about 80 runners), there was no-one to hide behind! It's a long time since I've been in a car round the circuit but I'd forgotten how hilly the circuit is. Couple of stiff pulls up short, sharp hills which added to the leg burn.

Right, went for my first run on my lunch break today. I managed to do 5 miles, with an average pace of 12Kph, so it took me roughly 40 minutes. I have no idea whether this is good, reasonable or bad, but I'm just going to keep on chipping away and see what I can do. I obviously went off too hard at the start because my fitness app said I had a peak pace of 33.3Kph

One thing I'm curious about, is it possible to have good HIIT/interval type fitness but be less capable at steady-state cardio? I would say on the football pitch I'm one of the fittest guys out there, I can chase people around for the entire 60-90 minutes (time depends on if I'm playing 6 or 11-aside). I'm sort of an Alexis Sanchez or Carlos Tevez type player (with much less skill obviously) in that I'm always closing down defenders, moving for the ball etc and I will feel tired after playing but am normally fine during the game. Whereas on my run today I felt gassed after about 20 minutes of running and really struggled to keep the pace up

You'l get micro-recovery when playing football where you have small periods of rest in between the periods of activity allowing your body to recover. You dont get this in running.

Been a while since I posted here. Plantar Fasciitis hit me pretty bad ~August time and has taken a while to get it down to manageable pain. Now only hurts for ~12hours following a run and going in the right direction so slowly upping my mileage again.

Trying some adidas boost shoes after xmas - felt amazing during gait analysis; they are a present so need to wait to try them properly.

Sorry to hear that The Darkness, hopefully you can come back injury free. Just remember don't do to much to soon. Fingers crossed for you.

Which Boost shoes you go for in the end? I'm looking at the Boston and Adios ones myself in the new year.

Gorilla those Adios Boosts are awesome, thoroughly recommend!

I was never a fan of the upper or heel on the Boston, they felt wrong all round, cannot comment on the boost version but previous experience enough to make me avoid and there is no need if you own Adios anyway. Adios since original has been nothing but awesome.

33.3kph is a misread ;)

And chasing a ball often motivates more than trogging along for a few miles!

Just received my place for the SaintéLyon on December the 6th (it'll be cold!). 75km, with 2000m, +/- from Saint Etienne to Lyon, kicking off at midnight. A nice and steady pace should see me in Lyon to catch dawn and a hearty breakfast.

So, what happened with this one?

I would also very much like to hear how it went!

I went for my first run in over six weeks yesterday; it was much more of an ordeal than I expected it to be. I am going to have to work hard to regain my fitness. It's almost upsetting to think that this time last year I was running 20km+, and yet 6km was a real struggle...

The first couple will be a struggle then it'll come back quickly. Good luck.

Just a little gift from Nike after me and a couple of mates accepted a running challenge from them on Facebook in October.

And I do realise it's bad luck to put shoes on a table but I'm hoping the bad luck can't catch me. :D

Wow very nice, will have to follow more companies on facebook and twitter to spot opportunities like that.

To fight the 3 days in a row of over indulgent Christmas meals went out for a 10k yesterday after not running for a week and was shocked at a new PB 47:38. Will be pushing for under 45 early next year. Hope by the summer time I can be pushing the low 40's
