Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Zoom Structure 18. Not sure if these are Triax but they've just dropped that part of the naming scheme? It's there stability shoe anyway where as Pegasus are there neutral shoes.

Itchytrigg - Wasn't a public challenge. My mate had noticed they opened a Nike running store in Manchester and asked Nike UK on there Facebook page if they were setting up a running group (they have now) and if so when. Nike had simply responded by setting us a challenge to run 200 miles between three of us in October to just keep us going whilst waiting for the run club.

My mate jokingly said is there anything in it if we do it and they said wait and see, very nice of them to be honest and will no doubt keep me buying Nike stuff for running in the future as well. Have a free Nike Manchester t-shirt from the running group as well so not doing bad at all!!

And good luck bringing your 10K time down, just be consistent and you'll see it drop over time no problem. Mine's come down from 46:07 to 40:43 this year. Sub 40 in 2015 for me I hope. :D

Aye, they dropped the Triax bit. I've still got a couple of pairs of Triax Structure 10s in the garage (though they are rather shot) and a pair of 14s.

I tried some Structure 16s or 17s on when looking for a new pair in August. Toe box was all wrong (way too small), so ended up with Mizuno Wave Inspires instead.

Oh nice, maybe they rebranded these are exactly the tights I was thinking of when I wrote the post. I have a pair exactly like that, maybe mines are slightly thinner as I wouldn't say mines are thermal but have the same mesh on back of knee's and the pocket which is handy so you've bought a great pair there, they'll be spot on

Shorts over tights, just ignore it's more of a joke than anything. In America it is more of a deal the guys tend to wear shorts over tights when running high school as they're still a bit worried about being seen in tights and they start poking fun at guys who continue to do it into later age. It's just a silly pastime joke ;)

No no no shorts over tights is very bad, our running club calls them ****es lol

Was out walking the dog today and naturally, with it being 1st January there were 25 times more runners out and about on the trails. So much shorts over tights and it's like 10 degree's out..... They think I am the nutter when I give them a big cheesy smile to say hello, if only they knew! :p:p

It's never been cold enough for me to feel the need to wear tights, though I do have some three quarter length compression shorts that I wear when it's below 0 degrees. Regardless, I wear the same three quarter length baggy shorts over the top, as I need the pockets for my phone, keys and oyster card/debit card wallet. I had no idea it was so strongly disliked by "proper" runners!

It's just a running (pun absolutely intended) joke man, don't take it seriously

I assume that the use of a camelbak is equally ridiculed? ;-)

;) :D

In all fairness, one of the guys I train with dabbles in Duathlons and such so he does a Sunday long run in winter wearing one of those with us "for practice", but he fills it with Red Bull, which he has spent the evening before shaking all the fizz out of.... Not even joking! So camelback ridicule is fine, unless you are a nutter, like Red Bull renegade above! Real man!

My Camelback (well, a North Face version) is a key part of my marathon training as well.

I hate running carrying a bottle in my hand, so it's the best option (to me) for carrying water, couple of spare gels and my phone. Sloshing is avoided by squeezing as much air out of the bladder as possible.

Entire winter is Sunday AM 16-18's and I never eat before hand let alone fuel along the way. Everyone is so different. The main guy I train with ran 2hr19 last year at Manchester he would join us for 18 and then head off for his last few on his own to do his last few 22 mile long runs prior to the marathon. All he used to have before meeting us was for long run was a banana. But then on the flipside, it was fuelling which let him down in his 2 PB marathons so there ya have it ;)

Looks like my training will be on hold for a while, hospital confirmed a stress fracture in my 3rd and 4th metatarsals today :( Feet have been stiff for a couple of weeks after doing the great Scottish 1/2 a couple of weeks ago but been massaging them and stretching which seemed to help. Was out doing some hill work today and could hardly take my shoe off afterwards. Think the miles have finally caught up with me this year.

Could be out for 6-12 weeks :(

Put my trainers back on for the first time in 10 weeks, felt so good!! :D

Foot held up well which I am pleased about but my base fitness has dropped significantly! 4 miles left me totally wiped:( I am hoping I will see things improve quite quickly once I get back into it.

1st race of the year on the 10th will mark 1 year of consistent running which I am really please with. Might not seem like a huge achievement but I have gone from not being able to run 500 yards to running half marathons in 1:45 in just under a year which I am pretty pleased with. 3 stone lighter too which is a bonus!!

This year I want to try and crack sub 1:30 for a 1/2 and perhaps complete a full marathon (injury and training permitting)!

Started running for the first time in my life five months ago. Couldn't afford the shoes I wanted so I just ran in plimsolls with the sole taken out to make them even thinner. So I got into the minimalist running.

Someone told me I could run faster if I wore some proper running shoes. I borrowed a pair of Nike Downshifter 6 today to do a 5K and I only beat my last time by two seconds. The race felt harder too and not as fun. I did go quite a bit faster in the first lap as I was near the front (for once) and I thought great this is easy like cheating! Then I just got dropped by loads of people as I slowed down in the second lap.

Also the shoes felt strange to run in, it felt like to me the cushioning was causing my feet to move from side to side (and these shoes are standard, no special arch support or anything). When I'm in the plimsolls my feet feel solid and controlled with no sideways movement. In these Nike shoes the cushioning felt like it was slowing me down when I landed because my foot was just squishing on the floor. I've only just reached the stage where my legs don't ache after running 5-10K. A few months back I had to literally lift my own legs with my hands to get in the shower after runs. Well after wearing these cushioned shoes my legs ache like they did months ago. So skeptical now with cushioned shoes.

How come? I was running minimal to build strength up and learn to run with good form then had planned to buy shoes to run faster. Now I'm thinking of just buying some minimal shoes like vivobarefoots or Bikila EVO's, or even doing total barefoot in summer because it's fun.

Just completed week two of my 16 week programme for the Paris Marathon! The distances are gonna start ramping up very soon!

I've completed week 1 having been out of action with knee issues since October.

In addition to the Brighton Half, I've also signed up for the Lidl Breakfast Run (20 miles) as an additional training run prior to Paris.

Accommodation all sorted for Paris now too, staying about 2km from the finish line!

I had a pretty rubbish autumn, picking up an injury meaning I couldn't run for most of September-November. I moved house in November, so I didn't have a chance after that either, so I really only started running again over Christmas.

However I've knocked 17 seconds off my 5k pb (new pb is 22:53), and have a had a good few 10ks since then, so the new year is looking up. Thinking about the Reading half Marathon, but would need to commit asap, and I'm dithering.

Nice one - good to know someone else is going out there for the run! I signed up for the Alloa Half Marathon today as it fits pretty well with my schedule.

Im fortunately staying 5 minutes walk / crawl from the finish line!

I ran a mile on a treadmill this morning. It's insane how happy it can make you when you have been out injured so long, completely unable to run a step. Don't take all the miles you can put in for granted because when it is taken away from you, it is horrendous.

I missed out on the tail end of summer having to pull out of a BMC 3000m I got a place in, missing the quick 10k I was putting all of my work towards where I know a big PB would have been, and have now of course missed out on much of the XC season and therefore selection and a chance to run again at the Edinburgh XC this weekend (See Mo Farah has snubbed Scotland yet again also). So yeah, running sure is amazing, until it is awful and ruins your life. Enjoy it when you can and never dread those stinking 5 miles in the rain/wind/ice/snow at 6AM because one day, 1 week or 5 years from now you might be waking up and thinking all you want in life is to run, and you cannot.
