Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Sounds like you've got plenty of time to get a good base MOT.

Got my 2nd half marathon this Sunday (Sheffield). I'm looking forward to the route going through the town centre, hopefully be plenty of support.

I've started to suffer from runners nipple though :o Did ~10 miles a couple of weeks ago and wondered what the blood on my t-shirt was from when I finished. Ooo, it smarts! Better find that economy sized pot of Vaseline...

Just read your stafford write up above, looking in good shape for the 2 hours at sheffield?

Good luck for that. Use same tactics as Stafford. steady pace througout knocking a few seconds of each mile and you should bag a PB and get below the 2 hour mark. As for sore nipples, tape is the best bet, vaseline wont last, especially as the weather gets abit warmer. I use steroplast. Zinc oxide if I'm feeling brave.

Any other areas use bodyglide e.g for armpits, inner thighs etc.

Only a mere 10k for me this weekend.

Thanks FB. If I can't find the plasters, I've got a big roll of gaffer tape somewhere  :D

Ah, it's not a plaster but tape on a roll. The adhesive is still zinc oxide on it but it's not as brutal when trying to take it off.... The plaster strip that you cut to size will work though.

Gaffer tape will work though - I'll listen for the scream when you take it off :D

37:28 for a 10k this morning, that's one of this years goals (sub 38mins) well and truly nailed :)

Came in 2nd, although over 3 mins behind the winner

Congrats on that very nice time ;) well faster than anything i can do!

I've been running on and off for as long as i can remember (more of a part time hobby) nothing serious just 5/10k and the odd longer run when i feel like a challenge and to be honest 50/60 minutes is around my 10k time :p on a good day, it's nice to see more serious runner times.

I may even have to start pushing a little for my times to come down a tad!

Top effort on the 10k FB!

Pleased to report 1:58:11 for the Sheffield Half today :D

No idea on splits this time. Doofus here pressed stop on my watch at 1 mile (instead of start to get a split time) and I didn't noticed until the 2nd mile. I also missed several mile markers entirely, though speaking to others indicated that the 12 mile sign was AWOL. I sucked an energy gell down around 11 miles as the two people I was running with had dropped me and I wanted a kick up the backside as I didn't have any headphones for my iPod with me.

No issue with the jolly old nip's this time - plastered and taped for good measure! :D

What are people's preferences at drink stations when running? It threw me a bit today to find it was cups of water rather than bottles (something I've never seen in my short running career before). I like to grab a bottle and then sip it over the next 1/2 to 1 mile. With the cups, most of the water went up my nose, down my top or on the floor

Excellent result Chris! we need a thumbs up smiley :D

Water in cups is a pain and I generally spill more than I drink. Apparently the trick is to squeeze the top of the cup together and drink throught the small gap that forms - whenever I try that the water ends up all over me as the cup explodes! Bottles are great though.

Congrats again on the PB. What's next then?

Thanks :)

Going to run the Liverpool 10k again (October) and I'm considering the Saab Saloman 10k XC at Delemere (Cheshire) in July. Probably going to leave longer stuff for a bit now and get out on my bike a bit more.

I'd like to get under 50 minutes for a 10k - looking at my MapMyRun.co.uk logs I'm at 55 minutes for a 10.7km route. I think I need to start putting in some intervals.

Nice one Chris and firstborn. 10k in 37mins  puts the 7k I did yesterday in 40mins to shame :p

Another shame is the bloody weather turning, hoping to go out for about 1hr20 today but this weather is making me want to sit on the sofa watching telly instead :D

I'd say it's realistic if you have some running ability and willing to put in a bit of effort. I don't train for that distance and it was only my second 10k race. Well I'd run a few before but that was nearly 25 years ago

I suspect I know the answer, but I think my current trainers are coming to the end of their useful life (had them since August, though my mileage isn't that high). They're Saucony Omnia 6s and I've been pretty happy with them so was going to get another pair online. Of course, Saucony have gone and updated to the Omnia 7. Should I get a pair of those or go and get another gait analysis done?

Check the runners world forums for any comments on the omnia 7 with regards to an update. If there's nothing negative then I'd buy the shoe as cheap as I could online. If the old shoe gave you no problems I see no need for another gait analysis if you stick to the same model.

I've only had one gait analysis done, many years ago. I stick with the same model shoes and all has been fine doing that. Did try a different shoe once and suffered for it though.

Started running again these past few weeks with the aim of a half marathon this summer. Never did do the one two years ago due to suffering from slight joint problems even after 4 mile road runs.

I stopped weight training over 9 months ago and have lost a lot of weight (some fat, some muscle) and was 77kg last time I weighed in which was 6 weeks ago. Two years ago I'd have been around 82kg. 5kg might not sound like much but it makes a big difference. I think that my quads may have been proportionally too large (due to squats, leg extensions etc) and may have contributed to knee issues.

Either way, my fitness is better than it's ever been. Did 5.63 miles in 50 mins on the road this evening (6.75mph average) and felt like I could have gone round again in all honesty. Didn't want to of course because we all know it's better to build up gradually. Happy and confident that I can progress this summer and crack a half.

Much prefer being fit and agile than being able to throw big weights around (Sorry Freefaller et al!).
