Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

So realistically it can be done, but it's advisable to just go out and run. Suppose it saves on money.

Come September I'll either be dead a couple of miles in or very happy. Hopefully latter.

Do you have any canals near you? I have one local to myself and find that other than a few other people and crossing the occasional road or lock that it's a pretty decent run with few breaks if any sometimes. Also good if you don't mind doing an out and back and just running for 2.5 miles for example and then turning around and running back. Be much better than running on a treadmill in my opinion.

Failing that, as mentioned above if you run outside often enough and take different routes you will soon learn the quieter roads and make it easier to keep your runs flowing.

First 10 mile run today. Randomly decided to ignore all the advice about how to train and got 5k and 10k speed PBs whilst also hitting my distance PR :o

Quite painful but it feels good to have got it done. Pace is nothing to write home about for many on here but I'm happy with the progression given where I was a few months ago :)

Assuming I hit my target of a half marathon sometime in Jan or before I'll most likely be going for the Manchester marathon in April.

saw the new (to me) curved treadmill design on Gadget show, if it genuinely addresses impact shock I associate with conventional versions maybe good ? - not sure if they have a industrial version appropriate for local gym though. (currently the only cardiac exercise I would consider in my local is rowing machine)

Nice work. I suspect I will feel like death when i get going again. Had nearly a month off now and Chrsitmas isnt helping. Wilmslow Half in March so i need to get a move on!

The story says they are in Virgin Active gyms so I guess if they're still there after two years then they're suitable for industrial uses, if they've gone then they either don't work so well or aren't that reliable.

You only have to beat yourself though and we all start somewhere. Good work and the pace is decent and give a couple of miles in the middle it's consistent with a good finish too. :)

Should hopefully find a decent half marathon to enter here too, a handful of options to consider if you don't mind running one towards the end of February.

Requested to follow you on Strava by the way (David Boundy).

Foot has been feeling a bit tender recently but against my better judgement I got out for probably my last run of 2016 just for a digital badge.

1004 running miles clocked this year and at least one half marathon per month.

It's been a pretty good year and I'm looking forward to getting faster in 2017. Hope you all have some big targets/goals/races planned for next year!:)

Good work Shamrock, ran just a little over 1000 miles myself this year.

My big aim for next year is a good for age marathon time (sub 3.05) but the stretch target and dream is going sub 3.00. PB currently stands at 3.07 so it's definitely possible.

Also looking to get to sub 18-18.30 for 5K and sub 39/40 for 10K.

well done and good luck for your running goals next year!

Glad everyone's running is going well, take care of that foot though Shamrock.

I've come back from the marathon really strong with weekly miles of 4,52,72,81,84 and will get around 65-70 in this short week before I take a break skiing. Mostly just easy running building the aerobic base but a little work on trails and some hill repeats (done gently). Did a 21mile LR last week and it felt great

currently at 2752 miles for the year, might just scrape 2800 and overall a little short of my 3000 mile goal.

Out of interest he many years have you all been running? I started seriously in May this year so I suspect I have a few years ahead of me before I get decently quick. Aiming for low 50mins for a 10k early March.

I started running about 5 years ago I think - started to loose weight - with an aim to do a 10 mile local race (took about a year to get fit enough) - then joined a local running club and have not looked back since

5'4 - started at about 13 1/2 + stone - now about 10 stone 1 - and race fit I've been a good few lbs lighter

been a reasonably good year - I managed 750 miles last year, due to some injuries and stuff - this year 1300+, met my one goal of the year of getting sub 19 for a Park-run, so need to set a new target for next year

run 5-6 times a week, gym a couple of times a week, and my cross-train sport - 2nd sport - is Figure Skating .... :) which is the most technically challenging, and physically challenging sport I've ever tried :)

quite refreshing to take part in a female dominated sport :) vs my previous cross-trained sports of WC Kung-fu etc :)

I've been running since Spring 2015.

Just passed 800 miles for 2016, I normally run between 2 and 4 times a week. Got my 50 Parkruns this week too.

My week is normally

Monday - Club Training (Speed work/Intervals ect)
Wednesday - Club Training (Speed work/Intervals ect)
Saturday - ParkRun
Sunday - Long Run/Race

I might try swapping one of the club nights for a Tempo run

I started mid/late 2014 before my 2nd son was born, was around 15.5st at the time (6ft2) and in about 6 months was around 13st. Was mostly aimless to start with but soon got into planned training for my 1st half late 2015 which gave a 1hr37 over a 1000ft hilly course.

This year has been fantastic for me, new PB's all round with 19:22 for 5k, 41:42 10k, 1:30:20 1/2. The 10k time was during my 1/2 race! 3 1/2's raced this year compared to 1 last year.

Currently on 1117 miles, I'd set a goal of 1000 but hoped to hit 1200 however last month I've been focusing on the gym as my upper body strength had gone down the pan lately, but still getting at least 1-2 runs in a week.

What's everyone's goals for next year? I want that sub 1:30 half which I think should be easily achievable if I knuckle down again.

I started in May, 420 miles so far plus some gym work. I seem to be a constant 75kg (5ft 9). Unfortunately the wrong side of 40 so recovery seems to take a bit longer but I'm massively fitter than at the start of the year. Good aerobic fitness I just run out of heart rate at the moment so working on intervals to try and improve my efficiency.

Aimng for a 45min 10k in 2017, I like the distance. Not too far to get bored, doesn't take too much time to train for and is quite fast paced once you get below 40mins.

Great progress, you will smash your 1:30 target!

My main goal is a sub-3 marathon end of April. It should be easy enough, I'm basically already there and instead flatter course without wind would have possibly scraped under back in November. I chose a flat race to give me good odds so I mainly have to worry about external factors like a heatwave. Nearer the time I will see about a more aggressive pace like 2:54 but it's impossible to know how training goes. IV made massive improvements in a short time but I shouldn't expect that to continue at these paces.

Along the way aim to do some shorter races to dial in a goal pace. These won't be goal.Races but I expect some big PRs becuSe everything less than marathon is very soft for me.

After that I might be moving house and job but if I'm not then I have a 50 mile ultra with 12K vertical in August. My only goal.would be to finish, lots can go wrong, minor things like a blister you can race through in a marathon but in an ultra. Can see you DnF. Also you need experience in pacing.
