Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Just getting my stuff together before I give a half marathon distance attempt a go. My legs feel pretty good after giving them some proper rest so hopefully that combined with the new shoes should mean that I don't give up part way through... :p

Stalled a bit since running regular 5ks since I don't really have a goal anymore and it's sapped my motivation. I'm planning on training for a 10k now and mix things up a bit to keep things interesting. Maybe eventually a half marathon.

I always find I train like a boss when I have a plan and structure but it falls apart once that's gone.

Good job FT glad to hear the trainers have made things more comfortable.

The ice was pretty bad here today, total lack of grip on one road for about a mile. 7 miles today and certainly feeling the effects of my lack of effort over the last month... better get back on that soon

Bit alarming. Legs are mostly fine today but I woke up last night with several short sharp pains inside my hip (felt like the joint where the leg joins). My ROM is fine and I can walk on the leg without pain but every so often, even when sitting, I'm getting a sharp pain.

Googled it and the results are quite worrying. If it's a tear then my plans for the April marathon are shot :/ Not going to get overly dramatic just yet but any advice would be appreciated.

edit: Scratch that, pain levels are far worse now. Arranged a drs appointment... woo.

Cheers IG :) I will be pretty miffed if this means I can't run the marathon. Taking a 6 week break from running would essentially scupper it. I suppose I could do a half at the same time instead maybe.

Hopefully I can still cycle even if I'm resting anyhow.

Hope it's nothing, just remember that the internet is the worst.....everything my wife looks up means she's got cancer...everything!

Obviously not saying ignore it, you are right to get it checked, just that it's hopefully not as bad as you've seen it could be.

Yeah. I'm trying not to be overly dramatic about it as (as you say) the internet is pretty much just full of horror stories.

If the pain hadn't suddenly got so agonising I'd have been happy just resting it but it's worse than my collarbone was. Or my memories are a bit cloudy.

I can't remember the last time I went for a run, I've been focused on mountain biking for the last year.

However, I've just got back from a 3-miler and I'm fairly pleased with the results - 3 miles in 23:58 - that pace should give me a sub 25 minute 5k time if I'd continued for the extra 200 meters…

Clearly, the mountain biking has helped my general fitness, even if the muscle groups are slightly different to running. :)
