Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Same with you. There are loads of you so I plumped for the one showing as Banbury.

There is an OcUK cycling club on Strave so maybe there should also be a running one? That might make finding everyone a little easier perhaps.

Yup I see you :)

Yeah defo, I think that would be a good idea, its just anything to try keeping the motivation up that I need!

Ok, so I did go for my lunch run, got to the 4 mile mark and went to head back to complete 6.2......... The running felt good though, so I carried on and completed a "Double Laker" and completed 8.1 miles average pace 7:37 /mile. This also gave me a 10k PB of 47:05, I think its the fastest run I have completed so quite happy now :D

Called my doctors today for the results of my xray and apparently no signs of bone injury, nor bone/joint abnormalities which I was pleased with. Also not done any running and been wearing metatarsal pads for the last 2 weeks or so and my toes are feeling better. I intend to get back to running this week so will see how I go, will give it a gentle 5k and hopefully all will be well.

On Thursday I did my first run for a couple of weeks since having a problem with my toes. Did a fairly easy 5km (while wearing my metatarsal pads) but after about 4k my toes were once again feeling a bit tingly and I knew they'd end up hurting more if I went further.

On Friday I happened to have a day off work so I took the opportunity to go to my local running shop to see if they could shed any light on what the problem might be. They had a look at my shoes as initially they suspected it could be that there wasn't enough room for my toes but they quickly ruled that out.

Next I had to stand on a glass panel and they looked to see if my arches were ok. They said my tranverse arch was slightly collapsed and suggested some innersoles with a raised area to keep the arch raised and open to maintain circulation to my toes. I figured this was worth a try, particularly as they offer a full refund if the soles don't help!

Yesterday I went for a run with the new innersoles in place and my toes did feel better, not quite completely ok but better than they had done the last couple of runs. I did 7.5km and by the end my toes were felling a little tingly but not too bad, however I feel that if I had carried on they would have gotten worse. I als have found that my right foot (the one which I'm having trouble with) felt like the laces were a little bit too tight across the top of my foot at the end of the run.

I intend to get a couple more runs in this week to really see if the inner soles make a difference or not and might try a different lacing to reduce pressure on the top of my foot to see if that might help too.

I am slightly concerned though that with just sitting watching tv last night my right foot felt a bit like it was bit constricted though I didn't have anything on it beyond my normal socks, so I'm not quite sure what's going on with it. Methinks I'm going to have a bit of a struggle to get to the bottom of it all and in the meantime I'm a bit reluctant to run much for fear of making it worse.

I thought my cat had fleas and I was itching for days - my cat doesn't have fleas it turns out....

I think you need to not be too fixated on it and try the easy things such as lacing in all honesty.

Went for a run last night and got horrendous shin splints in my left shin. Haven't had that since i started buying decent trainers so was a little weird. Ended up doing a mixture of running and walking to get get around. I am waiting on my new trainers to be delivered though and i've been experiencing knee/lower back pain quite a bit recently. I think not enough stretching is a factor there though.

Going to go gym tonight after work and aim for 5m on the treadmill. Then head to the sauna after to help my muscles relax.

One thing that's now making me think of going for the Garmin watch is that when i was using Strava my apple watch doesn't seem to have counted my steps. This means it's ignored 3 miles worth of steps (around 6k). It's also not linking through to my Vitality app to give me my points.

The Garmin just feels very expensive for what it is and annoyingly it's not available on the Garmin website so i can't get a discount on it. I'd be happy paying £180 rather than £300

I think it does count steps but the Health App adds them into the "Running & Walking" distance. Instead of actual walking steps etc.

I personally don't use the Vitality App, but it must be an easy way to link the 2? As they give the Watches out with their policies.

Yeah you'd think so but it just doesn't seem to be working. My run/walk last night was over 30 mins at an average of 150bpm (low given the amount of walking i guess), which should have given me 8 points even without the steps but it's not getting picked up even though the watch shows as being linked. With the Garmin app it just "worked"

Good work.

I've signed up for the Chorley 10k, it's only 17 days away so think i need to start planning on increasing distance as i've just been doing around 3 miles generally.

Upped it to 4 miles this morning and still felt alright. Think my plan will be to aim to do miles this Sunday and then 6 miles on the Sunday after. Thinking that if i aim for around 5 days a week and do 4 miles one day and 2 miles the next then i should build it up. How does that sound?

My girlfriend and I have signed up to the Chorley 10k. Just over a week away now, how are you shaping up?

She's doing the Windmill 10k this Sunday too, it had sold out when I tried (1500 entries!).

Erm, i think the last time i ran that distance was over 12 months ago when i was running 3-4miles ~5 days a week. I then gave up until about 3 weeks ago and have since been out around twice a week

I did just under 5miles on the treadmill on Tuesday and i always struggle on a treadmill as find it very stuffy in the gym and overheat. My plan is to do around 5miles tonight outside, then do the actual 10k course on Sunday since it's very close to my house.

I imagine my time will be around 1:05 which is pretty rubbish compared to what i was doing last year but i'll be happy enough just getting round at this stage.
