Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

@Dup yeah you’re another that is very good at giving Kudos :)

I got out yesterday for a very dissappointing run. Not a good idea about going after one of the new big Big Macs and McDonald milkshake!

Had planned for a long run but cut it very short and ended up walking a lot of it!

Who is Dan that keeps giving me kudos on Strava? Thanks, it definitely is nice to see the encouragement. :)

Heh I think that's me... I think everyone who gets off the sofa deserves kudos!, I get abit trigger happy with it though to a point where I try and give it to myself :D

I know the feeling. I was having a 'big tasty with bacon' burger and fries / shake with family other day. I read the wrappers and I would would have needed to run more than 10k to burn that junk off. Puts things into perspective just how bad mac d is for you if you eat it on a regular basis.

That is an order problem - LR first then indulge!

Yeah, the new Grande Big Mac is like a double Big Tasty. Far too big a burger. I didn't even really want it :(

Boo :-( No long run due to ill people needing hospital appointments and so on! Talk about inconsiderate ;-)

Question now is, do I do long run tomorrow instead of Sunday or just drop it and stick to the days as per plan?

Nice run

On this website you can view the Strava running heatmap, which can be a useful way to get ideas on new routs, find runnable short cuts etc.
http://onthegomap.com

Thanks for that! Already seen a nice little public footpath I keep passing. I never knew where it lead and it isn't on normal Google Maps. When I zoom in on the map, the heatmap seems to disappear? Anyway I can zoom in but keep the heatmap up?

Tried the site but it insists on doing this (See Image)

That's a canal bridge and the road has run under it since around 1830 :-)

At the top middle where you select that you want a walking route, there's an option at the end for "Straight route", click that to finish joining it up :)

unfortunately not, that is the annoying part.

As Marvt74 says, click the straight connection and you can do it manually. There are other websites that use OpenStreetMap that sometimes has some more footpaths but you cant see the heatmap

So week 7 day 1 completed last night. Really close to finishing the program. Really enjoying it and unsure where to take my running to next.

I'm unsure if I should consolidate at 5k and get better at that distance or move on to some form of 10k program when I reach the end of this program. Any thoughts?

I'd continue going to aim towards 10k (and beyond?)

If you consolidate at 5k then all you're doing is working on bringing down your times. If you were to get to 8min miles then you're only running for 25mins at most and thats not very long so i'd feel less motivated to do that. I much prefer running for around an hour.

Increasing the distance also allows you to branch out and explore more routes without having to worry about turning back after 2 miles.

If you did want to keep to short distances you could always look at more trek/fell running which would change things up a bit.

Honestly though once you can run 5k it doesn't take long to up that to 10k, you can then mix up your runs depending on how you feel. Not got much time? Go for a faster 5k, got a bit of time then go out for a slow long run.

As for me, i got out last night and did just under 4miles at what i need to be my race pace (around 9:20/mile to get under 2 hour half marathon). I definately shouldn't have eaten not far off a full bag of fruit gums before hand and then finished them off whilst running. The cold made them really hard which had a knock on effect on my breathing. Glad to have got the right pace though so now just need to work on extending the distance. Might work on that on Mondays as it's nice and flat around where i play football so it'll be similar to the Blackpool half.

@Marvt74 wait, so you run for 4 miles none stop? Since starting running, I haven't started any training plan but I'm now thinking it might be worthwhile seeing how I get on with one. Anytime I stop, I only walk for a 0-60 seconds at most before going again. A lot of the time when I do have that brief moment, I don't think I need it but just do it anyway but then as I get into the later run, my legs have warmed up and I can't stop. My last run I had a very brief walk after 1.7 miles, then after a short climb at 2 miles I had an even briefer short stop (maybe <15 seconds), then at 3.8 mile I had a few seconds (<10 seconds) just stretching my legs behind me. After this I then ran the rest of the way home, completing the 7.5 mile. I don't even feel the need to stop and walk for a minute or a couple of minutes though before heading off again.

For the short future, I don't have any plans on doing a half marathon or entering 10k races but it is something I'd like to consider going forward. I still haven't run a ParkRun yet even though all my runs are now passed the 5k mark :o.

I usually just go out and run whatever distance I've set or feel like. I don't have a watch, so it would be difficult keeping track of my pace while running. I still think I need to work on breathing as that's one part I struggle with.

Yeah i generally just run constantly. My old trainers gave me shin splits so i would stop after around 1.5 miles to do some stretches, but unless something feels wrong i just carry on. I've never particularly done a specific plan either as i'm not really strict enough with my running days/times to stick to something like that. Like you i just decide before hand generally how fast/long i feel like going and decide on a route based on that.

For breathing i just try and breathe every second step on the left foot. I feel that keeps me in a pretty decent rhythm although that's only when i'm thinking about it. Not sure how often i breathe when not being conscious of it!

My issue is stretching. I'm useless when it comes to that and don't do anywhere near enough either before or after.

Off Topic - But who's Harold? I've noticed he's another who's much better than me at giving Kudos!

Will keep the breathing in mind, thanks. I'm thinking about going out soon for a shortish run. Hopefully there isn't much ice to deal with but weather isn't great at the moment.

That would be me :p. I generally like to check Strava daily and see how people are getting on.

Ah then you're better than me. I just log my run on my watch, open Strava on my phone afterwards for it to sync and ignore everyone else :D
