Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

As the saying goes, you do you. In a race situation you can typically out perform your training pace as you have that extra push to hit a "legit" result. If you are aiming for 6min/km then go for it, don't let anything stop you.

Thanks. I realise so much of it is psychological. I always find running rather uncomfortable, so my brain makes me ease up as the HR goes up, or maybe my knee aches a bit... but in a 'race' situation, I think my competitiveness will take over. At the same time, if I don't break the 1 hour today, that's fine, the accomplishment will just be in the completion and it gives me a reason to do another :)

Great! Managed to hold a fairly steady pace, around 5:30 to 5:50, I think most of the way. I realised there was a lady 50 to 70m ahead of me that would be my 'target' and managed to pass her on the final straight, putting in my fastest splits at the end. Official finishing time 56:57! :) (Strava estimated 10k of 56:00!)

Speaking of sprints, there were some stunning ones in the marathon today. Can't get over what they can do, even after 42 km!

I'm just flabbergasted!

I did a PB mile the other day. 5:26min. No idea if that's quick or not.

I was dying towards the end of it though! Those guys are running 40+ seconds a mile faster for 26 of them! Just staggering!

Sure was Sarah hall in the womens was amazing to sprint like that at the end and take second.

Was shocked with how Kipchoge fell off though guess a real bad off day.

Shame Bekele was injured just going into it could have been an easy win for him but the conditions were not the best today I dont think you would have seen records broken.

That would be sub 17 min 5k pace which is pretty quick I would say. You've just got to keep it up for 2 more miles!

Nice effort! Well executed for a first race. My prediction of 57 mins was pretty close then. You really lit the burners for the finishing straight so I reckon you've got some headroom there to improve quite a bit. What's your next target?

@dwarf

I've managed a 18:09 5k.

Considering what I was like at the end of that mile, I very much doubt I could do it twice again! I'm built for endurance, not outright speed :(

Yeah, this is what my friend said. I think I would aim 5:20 to 5:40 if I run again and see if I can last!

The problem is the state of my knee :( I have a pretty knackered PCL and not much cartilage left, so Sunday was spent limping around and I'm only just back to normal walking today. I don't know how I'd be if I tried a half marathon...

Be interesting if it goes ahead. A local organiser is hoping he can put on a Half Trail Marathon on in January, which i'll probably try and sign up for.

I've had my 4th run since i got back from Spain. I'm still absolutely dying during the run, even easy pace i'm at 165-170bpm. I'm only doing short runs too as i don't feel ready on anything longer yet. I'm hoping my body sorts it's **** out soon!

Sportshoes is probably the main one for me, a good level of price and range.

I did like Amazon but it seems to be so full of random branded stuff these days with 5 star reviews that it's hard to know if anythings decent.

It depends on budget really. I do like UA stuff, but i tend to wait until i see a deal posted on HDUK as their tops/shorts can go down to around £12 in the odd colour but then the other stuff is £25-£30.

Thanks, I've never heard of that website. Prices look good and some pretty good discounts on at the moment. The only store I really knew about was Wiggle, but I don't see much of interest on there.
