Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

I prefer running in rain too:)

anyone else hate running friday or sat nights though? I normallyrun 8-9pm or so- and its far more likely to come across"grief" on a fri or saturday night than any other night - lads out in their cars and a few drinks I think

ever other night is ok - but occassionally on fri or sat you get the odd "$£$££$" and "£"£"" as they pass by in the car

only problem is normally my testostorone levels are VERY elevated - and I often mouth back substantially -I go into that mode of "I'll tkae the whole world on" lol! oops

managed my 500th km the other night since I bought my Garmin in March :)

tough regime atm though - last week:

Mon - Dentist (!! :( - root canal work)

Tuesday - run to gym (1km), 25 mins of high intensity X-Trainer, 25 mins of triceps/back work, and 1k run back to work

Wednesday - run to gym, 50 mins of Chest/Biceps, run back. Evening - 8km run

Thursday - run to gym (1km), 25 mins of high intensity X-Trainer, 25 mins of triceps/back work, and 1k run back to work

Friday - run to gym, 50 mins of Chest/Biceps, run back. Evening - 8km run

Saturday - guess what - same as thursday ! :)

Just back from a run and have a bit of knee pain, which is new, and a bit of a worry. It's not super painful and went away about 3 mins into my run, but it's kind of a weird burny ache below and to the inside of my kneecap. The area feels really warm to the touch and a bit 'jelly' like. Whacked some ice packs on it now and that's providing some nice relief.

I'm going to give it until Tuesday then try a light recovery jog.

I get this quite often - very painful if left untreated. Ice on it for 10 minutes after the run fixes it right up for me. Probably "runners knee", a very common problem. Was a great write-up on it in the most recent copy of Runners World.

Glad to hear it's nothing major. Ice fixed it right up and the swelling has disappeared already (going to ice it again later). Hopefully the Runners World article will go up on their website :)

I get a bit of knee pain now and then (wear and tear, apparently). I went to see my GP and he referred me to a physio who gave me a few exercises which really helped. One leg squats are good for dodgy knees as they strengthen the glutes (yer arse) which in turn help to keep the leg from flexing inwards at the knee when you strike the ground. Glutes are more important than many people realise for keeping your knees in good knick.

If you are getting swelling and pain and I'd certainly suggest seeing a doc or physio to make sure it doesn't get any worse.

awesome run tonight in the heat round the old a3 at the devils punchbowl, was 5km in the end, was weird running on a road I used to sit in traffic all the time, its now closed and is just sitting there empty, except some jobs worth security told me I couldn't run on the road, I just ran off lol

I started running again finally over the last month, doing 2 mile runs 3 times a week now but I find that my shins are just struggling more and more. Getting to a point where they physically hurt when I touch the bone on the front like I got tackled into them. Pain is concentrated around the middle of the shin bone on both legs, is this just a sign that I need to stretch better or could be the dreaded splits?

Neoboy - I have just recovered from 'shinsplints' and have been told if I get any pain at all I have to stop as I tried to come back too early on two occasions and just put back my recovery both times. I do admit I was silly as I don't really enjoy any other cardio style training and was trying to rush back to training.
My shins always hurt after a run and if i stopped to cross roads and things but when I was running it sort of eased off abit. But after it was really bad.
Have you got new trainers or been increasing your mileage recently?

Well after tearing my quad i'm starting to get back into fitness. Did my first ever bit of CV for 3 weeks on monday, did 30minues on a cross-trainer - thought I was going to die :o !!

Going to get on the bike tonight and then I have a running plan.

I'm thinking I need a goal to aim for, and I am VERY interested in doing a 10k run/race and possibly something like the great north run. How long does it take to train for these, a year or so?

just replaced my running shoes (like for like saucony hurricane's just a year newer design) and what a difference - hadn't really registered how worn and how much cushioning was gone

Back from a quick 2.2 miler and the knees are fine after taking all week off. Icing them anyway to avoid problems.

Depends what you are trying to acheive and how much time/effort you are putting in. If you just want to get round the GNR then 3 months doing 3 or 4 runs a week is probably ok. If you want to do it well (or as well as you are capable) then more time with some other races mixed in as well

Well that was fun.... Forgot how steep a section of a route was today as I have not done it in a good few months but wanted something different today. Half a mile in and a mountain looms... 170ft of elevation in around 0.6 miles.... Killer TBH :o

Managed to make it keeping pace? I don't mind ones where you grit your teeth and pound it out, but it's the hills where you grind it out, grind it out, and there's still another half mile of hill to go.

Did I chuff... Ended up walking a small bit of it. Given that my average pace for the first mile is normally 7:00, there was no way I would sustain it for just over half a mile on a hill which is about 30% incline or slightly more in places.... My 1 mile time was 8:40

Of course, what goes up must come down and I picked it up over the whole distance to be just 27 seconds slower then the 3.15 mile course I normally do albeit this is also hilly in places but nowhere as bad as today's route (25:49 v 25:22). According to Endomondo, my 5K time was 25:01 today instead of 24:53 which I blame entirely on the hills :p

I was also bladdered last night but I tend to run better the day after a night on the lash for some weird reason  :D

I have a cyclepath about 0.5 mile from me which is flat so I may have a go on that just to see what my 5K time would be as, because of where I live, I end up having to run up hills especially on my return leg. Granted that means I must be doing some downhill at the start of the run but running uphill is far harder at the end of a run when you are knackered than at the start. You can get your wind back going downhill when gassed, not so much when going uphill :o

My pace is hardly fast but you have go to start somewhere which is currently just over 5K every 2nd day.

Well I went for my first attempt at the Couch to 5km today.

Managed most of it, did 1.14 miles in 19m36s. Quite pathetic but I'm incredibly unfit at 20st 9lb at 5'11". Had my analysis at Sweatshop on Satuday and came home with some Asics GT2160 which seem ok, although I don't really know what good and bad feels like with the shoes.

I couldn't do all the running involved as I ended up with a killer stitch, so think I might have to do the c25k Week 1 phase for a couple of weeks as I'm a heavy lump. I'm at the heaviest I've ever been. Start some hypnotherapy tomorrow too (Hypno Gastric Band ) so combined with running I should get into a good place.

Is it right I should only run every other day?

On RunKeeper http://runkeeper.com/user/seanjudge/profile if anyone wants to add me :)
