Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

The good thing about the Garmin is I can search for other people's runs and compare them to mine, so I also look at their heart rates and their around 150-160 so mine seems a bit high..

No point comparing your heart rates with anyone else given they may be fitter than you so their heart rates will be lower as standard....

If you feel your heart rate is high then it's high. The only way to sort that is run with less intensity or just keep running to get fitter.

agreed. Really you should be doing a maximal HR test and then basing your training on that.

I also have a question, I went on a 6 mile run today and I am a bit concerned about my heart rate. It's average was 183bpm which is a bit high isn't it? I was doing 9 mins a mile so wasn't pushing that hard and wasn't out of breath much the only problem was my legs felt a bit weak and tired. Is it due to the warm weather or just need more training and go a bit slower to start?

You will find that your heart rate can vary from day to day when you doing the same run at the same speed. This can be a good way of ascertaining whether you are over training. But yeah even allowing that the devices are not always 100% correct an average heart rate of 183 says that your heart was working hard on that run.

just got the garmin 305 watch and wondering if someone would be able to explain how i set is so i know when i am running over 9minute miles (alerts me to slow) as i cant seem to set it up right?

Assuming its the same as the 205; Mode - training - training options - alerts - pace/speed alert - fast and slow pace alert value.

From what I remember though you need to have a pace zone defined.

I did it a few weeks ago on mine and I remember it being intuitive enough to not need to look it up, have a fiddle (sorry that is not particularly helpful!)

Running socks people... I seem to suffer occasionally from rubbing on the ball of my foot just where it starts to go up the side of my foot (if that makes sense). I am using a cheap generic sock for running which I know is probably most of the problem.

I am stuck between these 3 -

I am open to other suggestions with one caveat - I don't like those ankle type socks. I prefer socks that come up the leg a bit i.e. like normal socks and not the socks that just comes to your ankle...

Oh, they also must fit size 11 feet :)

Cheers for the help people. I desperately needed more gear for running/cycling as the only set I had was getting past it given all the wearing/washing. Just bagged me 2 sets each of these -

Hoping this stuff will see me good. Shorts needed to have a zip pocket to take my house key and I went for the Vizion tops as I plan on running through Autumn/Winter as well so needed something which would make me more visible in darker days without getting a full yellow dayglo top and look like a running banana LOL :D

Anyone got any experience of this kit or similar?

I'd agree with firstborn about Ronhill gear, Hilly stuff has been a mixed bag for me though.

Out of curiosity, is anyone down for/has any one done the Berlin Marathon?

Cheers people. Just wanted to ensure I hadn't tossed my money away as I am trying to get into running a bit more :)

Although I have been doing SOME running for a while (once every 7-10 days which is pants TBH) I have being trying to follow some kind of structure within the last 6 weeks. My main "theme" is to increase my distance by 10% every week of which I am upto around 4.75 miles as of tomorrow 3 times/week (sometimes 4)

I manage to keep a rough 8 min/mile although I do find myself walking for about 1 min in total over the distance so I am trying to remedy this. I just seem to find it hard not to start off so quick (1st mile is done in around 6:55-7:00) as I feel I am just moving so slow  :(

I mainly find I am walking at the same bits which is just at the end of long steady uphills where my thighs (quads?) feel like jelly and even more so if I manage up it and then the terrain flattens out...Unfortunately I live in amongst hills so flat running aint happening around here :o

The gear I mentioned above arrived yesterday... Didnt quite realise how bright the yellow rear section of the tops were :o... At least I'll be seen on the road :D

Seems decent quality albeit it will take a bit of getting used to as, even the XL size, is snugger than I normally have. Being designed as a garment that can be used itself or as a base layer, it's probably designed to be snug...

Shorts are unbelievably light... I cannot physically register any weight to them at all compared to the standard black nylon shorts I have been using.

At the moment I'm able to get a good deal on Asics Gel Kayanos that were recommended to me by a friend.

Problem is I must order them online. Those anyone know what Asics's sizing is like? I'm normally a 10.5, but sometimes take 11 depending on the shoe.

My kayanos have always been comfortably sized for me.

What's a good deal btw? My last pair was £95 for the current model.
