Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Glad to hear things seem to be improving for your foot @Martynt74. I guess early days, but fingers crossed. Sounds like the move is also going well. I'm a big fan of sitting out in the sun, but I need it colder for running

I'm actually just back running this week too, after catching Covid last week (2nd time now).

Ouch. Hope you recover quickly.

I was doing ok. However Thursday I had the great idea to head into the mountain behind me…. In road shoes.

Was only a 5k loop but with~750ft ascent. Also incredibly rocky and technical.

The run itself was amazing and I loved every second but there was a heck of a lot of force/strain through my feet, going to be tough not doing that again soon!

Purchased my 2nd pair of nike invincible 2's, they turned up last week. My old pair didn't last to long before they lost some of their bounce but they are super comfy. My old pair will now just become my daily trainer.
I've been looking at faster trainers for some speed work and 5k running, i have widish feet which is such a nightmare. I've got a pair of ascics noosa tri turning up, something a little different. If i don't like them i'm going to grab some endorphin pro 3s and use them for speed work and running fast. I've tried an 11 on in them but they didn't quite have enough room so didn't go with them.

Currently still not really running, although went out yesterday for just under 3 miles and my foot felt ok at the end so hoping a continuation to take it easy will carry this on.

However can someone please explain why i'm eyeing up this! 3.6km event with 1000m of elevation :D

Feb update

18 runs (21 hrs)
197km with 3250m ascent.

Still no weeks below 30km.

So far a fairly consistent start to the year for me.

Mar update

19 runs (21 hrs)
208km with 4800m ascent.

Had my first week without hitting 30km though :( Was due to getting Covid (2nd time overall now), but pretty happy at how I bounced back this time.

Overall very happy with consistency of my first 3 months this year. Have also started to throw the odd bit of pace work into the mix. So getting closer to 80/20 than my usual 100/0, easy running :o

Great North Run later in the year, still in line to be my first official event in 10 years!

A 1:3 gradient

Sounds fun brutal!! :D

@div0 thats great consistency and good fortitude to carry on after a failure rather than letting it continue which is brilliant achievement.

I love the idea of the run. Just don’t know if it’s too much. Even at a walk pace.

I need to stop being stupid and doing a few runs in flat(ish) terrain and jumping into tough stuff. Especially when I don’t feel right.

Is there anywhere you guys know where to find last minute London marathon places? Surely they get some drop outs but cant see any info.

Anyone with a ballot place who can't take part can defer for next year, and you'll probably be too late for any last minute charity places.

Have you tried some Altras? Probably the Escalante or Racer? I've got wide feet as well and they're my shoe of choice for running fast.

Never tried out from them before.
The Asics are great. Really comfy and really really light.
Ran the park run this weekend. Nearly 2 minutes faster than a few weeks ago =)

Longest run in a while yesterday, 6.5 miles at a sedate 8.35min/mile. I had attempted a return to form in August '22, but got side tracked a few months in by a bout of kidney cancer. Kidney removed 9 weeks ago and I'm now in the hands of oncology. Keep on plodding!

After my good start to the year, April is already putting up a fight. Fresh from my Q1 update, I went for a run yesterday and took on a (ironically named) style with a bit more gusto than normal. As I glided back down to earth on the other side, the ground flat out refused to engage with my feet and I went down with all the grace of a butterfly catching a sack of spuds.

Have spent the past 48hrs with bruised ribs and a side helping of self loathing.

Cheers. I was far from positive in the run up to the op, even though cancer wasn't confirmed at that point, just that I had a lesion in the kidney. Somewhat stressful and lost 2 stone due to the anxiety, which is useful now I'm back running! Since the op and diagnosis I have been somewhat more positive and. due to start immunotherapy in the next few weeks and hoping the side effects aren't too grim!

Haven't posted for a while, been busy plus nothing much has changed. Did switch to carnivore diet for the last three weeks, it made a marked improvement to my overall well being.
Anyway did the south west traverse over the weekend, tough as it was a right quagmire but still managed sub 10 with 9.52 on the tracker which was aim.
The mafate speed 4 whilst slow we're amazing with the grip, looked after me all the way.
