Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Question for the runners. Do Any of you do weight training as well as running? I'm starting (early) to prepare for the Great North Run this year but don't want to give up the weightlifting I've been doing for the last 4 months as I've seen some awesome strength gains.

I was thinking of a schedule like:

Monday:
Shoulder Press
Pendlay Rows
Dips

Tuesday:
Running

Wednesday:
Squats
Deadlifts
Bench Press

Thursday:
Light running

Friday:
Rest

Saturday:
Running

Sunday:
Rest

Does that look like it will kill me?

Anyone doing the Great North Run this year?

Me and some friends were talking about it today, could be a good way to actually get some motivation. But the entry fee kind of puts me off, i don't see why i should give £42 (which is quite a large portion of money i actually have for spending) to a private healthcare company for the privilege of running through a public place.

And why is http://therunningbarefoot.com/ down?

Went for a 4.5 mile run yesterday after not running properly in over 2 months. A bit foolish as after about 4 miles the arch of my left foot started to feel sore, i had plenty of energy left but didn't want to do any damage so headed home at the point.

Woke up today and the arch was very sore, about halfway through today it pretty much collapsed (spend most of my day on my feet with hard soled office shoes). How long have i got to avoid running for before it's worth having another crack? Was going to go out again on Thursday for a quick 2 miles to test it out as i have no clue how long it takes for the arch to strengthen up again. Surely its not serious enough to warrant a doctors visit or am i underplaying the issue?

Just turn up and run it, whos going to stop you? :p

Good idea to un-sticky in my opinion. It should work like the other day-to-day threads if we keep updating enough :D

Depends how bad you think it is. If I hadn't run for that long I wouldn't go in and attempt that sort of distance. I'd probably start with 3-4k and take it really easy to check everything is in working order and then build my distance up as everything re-strengthens. In my case it's normally my knee or my left calf that is the weak point and it takes a few weeks to toughen them back up if I've been out of running for a few weeks. I'd take a week off and then do your 2 miles. Don't forget there are muscles in the bottom of your foot and you've probably strained something that wasn't ready for a long pounding.

It's been a mess for the past three days, but it's much better today so I think you're right, it's just muscle strain. This seems like sound advice. I'll continue cycling/weights for next week to give it time to strengthen up then do a week of two mile runs and up it to three the next week etc.

I did my first Parkrun 5K this morning in Crystal Palace park. Managed a 21:26 which includes 75m elevation on each of the two laps. It's a proper lung buster that route, so I'm pretty happy with that!

Is it advisable to put running shoes in the washing machine? If so, what sort of settings? I've read not to put them in the tumble dryer after though.

Got quite a bit of blood inside one of my shoes, cleaned it up when I got back and after leaving them to dry, the front is more or less a red tinge instead of white.

Why do you care? Sooner or later they are going to wear out and get chucked. I live in the country and pretty much within a couple of weeks any new pair of trainers are muddy. It's not a fashion show

Not bothered about mud on them, just don't want the front covered in blood. Decided I am going to just hand wash it with some of that stain devil stuff and warm water.

I've put mine through the wash on a cold wash before. They came out all shiny and white again. More importantly, a large amount of the disgusting stink was washed out of them :D

You're not supposed to, according to the manufacturers, but I've never had a problem.

Got myself some Brooks Pure Cadence minimalist runners today. Interestingly the pain on my right ankle I've been experiencing after 40ish minutes usually with regular asics trainers didn't rear it's head tonight during some circuits. So thumbs up from me. Shall road test them properly in next few days.

After 8 months lay off from any running (knee problems with running 6 years of solid marathons and halfs) the doctors have finally sorted the knee :-) started running very slowly this week again :-) will do a month on tread mill then move back outside maybe start fell running?

God I fill so unfit

What was the problem with your knee and what did they need to do?

After not running for 2 months as pain was to bad went to doc who sent me to consultant x ray and then a scan and he said there was major wear and tear and fluid behind knee cap? So 2 steroid injections and minor key hole surgery and 6 months rest the knee seems to sorted :-) only been running for 2 weeks but every session I seem to be getting fitter?:D
