Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

You tend to find treadmill running is easier than out in the real World unless you put a good incline on the treadmill (5+) as you have to endure hills and uneven surfaces outside as well as the weather (wind)

Glad I went to a proper running shop and did the gait analysis thing. Turns out I had a lot of over-pronation and have some shoes which correct it nicely (Brooks Trance). Can't wait to get out and try these now :)

Take it very easy. Walk, jog, do some sprints, don't do a lot of distance.

I'm hoping too. I did it for the first time last year and got a 2hr 1min so hoping to improve upon that. I'm also doing the Great Manchester Run and hoping to do the Great North 10k too.

Went for my first proper run in 7 weeks. I did 1.5 miles last Tuesday but I felt a small bit of pain in my knee which kinda disheartened me so I didnt run again :(

Through sheer frustration I ordered a Mueller Max Knee Strap and went for a 3 miler today... Not even the slightest bit of pain occured \\o o// \o/ :D :D (I think I can link to that item on Amazon as OcUK don't sell it... If not then can the mods remove the link but leave the item name)

Its amazing what a couple of foamy tubes and some lycra can do. I dont propose to rely on this item forever but I will use it as a small "crutch" while my knee gets stronger. It basically helps my patella tracking (which was the main cause of my niggly pain) and gives support to the ligaments around the knee.

Lost a good 2 minutes off my 3 mile time though due to fitness level decreasing and me putting on some weight over Christmas :o... Shouldn't be long till I am back where I was though :D :D

I can't tell you how happy (and strange) it feels to be back running. Happy as I missed it and strange because, if you had said to me 6 months ago I would look forward to running and miss it if I stopped, I would have laughed at you :o

I shall see you in May then for the Manchester run, or probably not due to the number of runners!

I think I had a slight 'runners knee' when ramping up distances but this went away with proper stretching and exercises, all of which are on-line and may help you get out of the brace quicker.

My gf ran the 10k in 56 minutes on Sunday. So proud of her for that effort :)

Running an 11 mile run this weekend in preparation for her half marathon in February.

When I used to get this I found that ice really helped after each run.

Not tried ice but if it ever comes back I'll give it a go on top of exercises.

A late Christmas present that arrived today!

Looking fly! Are they comfy?

Not really! Need an extra half a size :(

Got some Glide 3's coming soon as well for the road.

Ha aye! :D Good luck with the training, I'll be there with monkee off here too am hoping it'll be a great day. Nice trainers too

Ah cool, what target time did you put when you entered? (in case we are in the same start group)

I think I put 45mins. :) Not sure if that is too high/too low last time I did 10k I finished in around 55mins and this time i'm going to be training properly last time was minimal and just a few runs. Based on my runs at the min I can do 4miles at a 8:20mild pace and I have loads of time to work on that too :)

Also got confirmation of my place in the Great North Run this year today so excited for that!! :D

It is rather steep! But then it's the biggest 10k in the UK and local to me. Over 30,000 runners as well as the elites that run and the 150M sprints make it just a great event to be involved in (imo).

I have seen Ewan Thomas, Usain Bolt and Haile Gebrselassie amongst others both whilst running, in the build up and after the event which is cool.

Yeah, it is really steep in terms of the cost but it does look a cracking event.

I run for Salford Harriers and I've helped marshall the front line at the last two. Get to see all kinds of runners, get to see the elites close up (Haile Gebrselassie is such a happy man!!!) and the atmosphere is great.

It's not one I don't think I'll run anytime soon though due to the cost even though it's less than 3 miles from my house.

We have decided to release this thread as we need to free up “Sticky” space. We have however, added the link to the S.A. “SA Rules and links thread” sticky for future reference and your convenience. This means followers of all different sports can have a feature thread linked from this page rather than having too many “Stickies” which seems fair.
