Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Great times at the great scottish guys! I came in at 2:15:55 with severe cramp which rendered me useless for the last 2KM!!
Reasonably happy for my first attempt - now I need to set my sights on my full at paris

Completed the Jersey marathon yesterday as part of a 3 man relay team. We were supposed to have 5 runners but due to late injuries we didn’t have time to find replacements. We managed to finish in a time of 3:50:06 with one guy running legs 1 & 2 for a total of 9 miles, myself running the 7 mile 3rd leg and our final runner doing leg 4 & 5 for 10.2 miles.

Chuffed with the time considering it was far further than any of us had intended to run, I was meant to be running just a 4.5 mile leg initially, with zero training and a heavy night on the beers beforehand :)

Well done!

I have a bit of a dilemma, it looks like I've developed a bit of runners knee, with a half marathon due on the 2nd November, I'm wondering if I should just train lighter, rest up a couple of weeks or pull out completely?

Thanks IG. And super well done to Salsa... that's some serious hard work to get 2 Sub 2hr Half's on your first go.

I ran an extra 40 miles this year training compared to last year and it definitely helped. Still didn't do anywhere near enough training though (~103miles all year).

Gonna sign up for the Swansea & Cardiff half next year to get a bit faster. I HAVE to break 2hours damn it :D

Thanks.

I can definitely feel the faster pace in my legs today and am guessing will be even more stiff tomorrow heh. I have put in about 450 miles since Jan this year which has definitely built up my base stamina and fitness. I did no miles in the run up to the race on Sunday but my base fitness carried me through.

Seriously starting to think about a marathon for next year although I have a couple of goals I want to accomplish along the way.

Sub 20min 5k (current PB 24:30)
Sub 40min 10k (current PB 50:45)
Sub 1hr 30min 1/2 (current PB 1:46:08)

I think they should all be doable as long as I have the time to put the miles in and stay injury free over the winter.

Well done!

I had been suffering with runners knee in the run up to my 1st 1/2 in September. I eased off the mileage for a couple of weeks and strapped up good for the race and found that I managed to complete without too much pain. Only you will know how much of a problem your knee is and if in doubt I would speak to your doc. I managed to knacker both knees back in Feb by training on an injury which I thought I could run off which put me out for about a month.

Entered the Great Birmingham Run (half marathon) this afternoon. Lets see if I can get my sub 1:30 this year. :

Going to enter Manchester Marathon for next year on payday as well and considering the Adidias TR24 if I can persuade a friend to do it with me!!!!!!

Looks like I'm finally defecting from Garmin after 10+ years, my forerunner finally bit the dust. Mulling up an Ambit2/2 Sapphire. Helped in no small part by the utter garbage that Garmin connect has become, but I feel like a change, and the Ambit2 looks great, and most importantly has excellent battery life.

In a word? It's horrific. It used to be fantastic, then they updated the interface, and my god. It's slow, buggy, and navigating it is horrible in comparison to the old one. Don't get me wrong, the watches are good, but if you're a stat junkie like me they ruined one of the best features.

That said, if you just use Strava for example then no dramas. Basically I want a watch for ultras, and mountains. It came down to the Garmin Fenix 2 or the Ambit two and the Ambit seems to knock the socks off the Fenix.

Oh I'd read that it had been improved over past versions but was a little niggly.

I do like yourself enjoy my stats. Endomondo that I use currently isn't too bad at all..

Have you considered the new Forerunner 920XT? I have pre-ordered one, it should hopefully arrive within a couple of weeks. The battery life is claimed at 40 hours compared to 25 hours of the Ambit watches. On the downside, it's expensive. I will be selling my Forerunner 620 in order to recover some of the cost.

Whats up with Garmin Connect platypus?

I've been thinking (seriously) of purchasing a GPS Garmin Watc for my cycling/running...

I just picked up a two-week-old Garmin Forerunner 15 (with HRM) off the bay for 95 quid so will let you know how that works out.

Cheers Fuggan. I need one that does Running (obv) and Cycling if possible. I see a lot of the Run Watches don't have a bike mode annoyingly.
I was swaying towards a 620 but no bike mode...

I've never had any bother with Garmin Connect but see a lot of people recently are having issues with it. What are they exactly?

I'm maybe not the best example, the only reason I wear a Garmin is so I know how many miles I do per week and to keep to paces on runs ocassionally. Other than that I hate wearing the bloody thing. I took my 405 off at one point and was mid-throw before coming to my senses, it was miliseconds from ending up in the canal. But since getting my 620 not gave it much thought and it's fine, gets the job done and doesn't provide me this annoying barrier getting in the way of running.

One of the guys has a Fenix 2 thing. I hope he never drops it because it will make quite a crater on the deck. Thing is stupidly massive and heavy. It's like something straight off a marine. DNW.

Hum it's certainly an option (now ), thanks! Would be interested to know how you find it.

The modern interface does not work at all for me for some reason, but the classic one works just fine so I am sticking with it as long as I can.

I will report back once I've been using it for a couple of weeks. I wasn't considering getting a multi-sport device, but then I saw that it had daily activity and sleep tracking features, so I figured it was worth a try. I had pre-ordered a Garmin Vivosmart, so it made sense to me to get a device that incorporated the functionality of the Vivosmart and my existing Forerunner 620. I've been using a Fitbit for the past year, so I have gotten used to having to charge a device once a week anyway.

I'm really looking forward to receiving it :)

Yeah let me know. I've had the ok for the A2 Sapphire, so its that kinda price range I'm looking at anyway, I wont be ordering until late October, but need it before november as its only then a month to my ultra, when I'd want to be 100% comfortable with my gps watch.
