Play For Dream MR

The resolution can likely be increased a little but yeah the chipset is definitely a limiting factor.

This is not a headset if you want true 4k gaming visuals you will need to buy a DP headset for that because no wireless device can do it.

ALVR is a competing streaming app and you can increase the resolution beyond VD.

Yep that's true. Even Wifi 7 routers max out at like 25GB/s in the best case scenario and 25GB/s is nowhere near enough for uncompressed high resolution streaming

Virtual desktop uses only max 600mb per second, so even though 25GB per second is not enough for uncompressed we could still get far, far better quality resolution and bitrates than we get now if the Snapdragon processing quality was better. I am very curious to see what the next generation of socs will be like, I hope they are at least double the power!

Ok, well the RTX5090 is definitely a supersampling steamtrain! I am running Alyx on Ultra settings with CD on Godlike and 100% VD sharpening setting, with 500% steam supersampling, and it looks pretty amazing and runs at a solid 72hz. Supersampling makes a huge difference with this headset.

Did you change the setting to turn off the dynamic resolution scaling in Half life Alyx?

For some reason the game doesn't start properly if I use that command line, I just see the SteamVR grey space and hear sound and nothing else.

EDIT - Its working now but not sure if theres any improvement.

EDIT EDIT - Ok yeah close-up textures definitely improved. Wow the game looks amazing on this headset panel I cant wait for the new Monster Mode of VD!

This does look like a very strong contender for my next headset. I hope the 4XVR media player will be available so you can watch 3D Blurays.

I'm a bit wary of spending £1500 on something that's shipped from China, so hopefully they will have official UK/EU distribution at some point.

I've been playing with my Play For Dream MR headset for a few hours, here are my thoughts on it : the passthrough is at its best in excellent natural lighting (no real surprise there), but this takes it to just being a notch better than the Q3 passthrough imo, it's still close though, I'd say PFD MR is 7.5/8 whereas Q3 MR is 7, and in lower lighting levels there is slightly more noise to the PFD's MR image compared to the Q3's. EDIT : I put the PFD's MR into 'low latency' mode, now it's obvious the passthrough is much better in terms of latency i.e. no wobbling, smoothness etc, I was easily able to type quickly on my tablets small keyboard while in MR, I can't do that on my Q3 without making errors.

Head position is absolutely crucial, to the unaware first impressions with this headset are probably going to be bad, but with better eye positioning which for me is no facial interface and a Studioform top strap the image is excellent, the lenses are very good but not as good as Q3, Q3 lenses are 9.5/10 whereas these *when eye position is optimal* are 8, I don't see much glare in the notoriously bad for glare boot up screen, but of course it's not secure on my head like this so a better solution is needed. FOV is a bit bigger then Q3.

The controller tracking is good but there is a slightly annoying blind spot which the Q3 doesn't have, it's when I stand with my arms just hanging down straight at my side, it doesn't track for me then. Battery life is poor, probably around the same or a bit less than Q3. Sound is ok, not great quality, might be a little bit louder than Q3 EDIT : it's not amazing but its definitely better than Q3, slightly louder & bass-ier at full volume. Software, it's functional, quite basic, not as intuitive as Meta's OS imo or maybe being used to Meta is the factor.

I've yet to properly tinker with PCVR gaming (briefly tried Beam.NG in Godlike with VD, looked very similar to my Q3 image, certainly no worse), I think I might save PCVR stuff until when the forthcoming Monster mode comes out. I have been able to get my own little Meta Quest MR app (TykeAI) running on it fine, it looks better than it running on the Q3 for sure. I'm slowly coming to a similar conclusion to what Seb of MRTV stated about this headset, it's not $1500 better than a Q3 but it is better, and might be suitable if you really want that bit extra and have the spare cash.

I think the main thing for me is it's Micro-OLED and wireless. It's the black levels that are important for so many games, and wireless is so much more convenient.

The wire and lack of MR are what puts me off Bigscreen Beyond a bit.

Good to read your thoughts. Hard to judge from other reviews what the headset is really like. It's either the best headset ever or totally not worth it!! The tracking issues will probably be fixed, so I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

PCVR is going to be interesting. What is the latency going to be like when you enable monster mode? The decoder is the same as the one in the Quest 3. It's already a limiting factor on the Quest 3 when using PCVR.

have the spare cash.

Maybe Ravenger might buy me one since I am always so nice to him here and on the Walkabout Social nights. :p

It's definitely not perfect, it does some things better, some worse than my Q3, I forgot to mention the PFD FOV is square shaped and a bit bigger. I'm hoping PCVR in VD monster mode in a dark scene in a game I like impresses me, today I'm going to watch a movie in my app to see the difference OLED makes to dark scenes.

I'm not sure of the details for Monster mode such as latency, it's due in about 1 month so will find out then. I'll be gutted if PCVR isn't significantly improved, if anyone can do it justice Guy Godin can

Yeh I am liking this headset now, it's in some ways like a souped up Q3 or a Q3.5 but it's not $1500 better. No regrets (good job as they only do returns for faulty headsets). If anyone is considering 1 I'd say don't expect big improvements over a Q3 or you'll be disappointed. Set realistic expectations. The face gasket doesn't fit western headshapes but they're making 1 for us. Monster mode in VD is soon to be released for PFD which might be a nice upgrade in wireless PCVR.

My realistic expectation is that if I am paying $1500 more than the price I paid for the Quest 3, then I want a headset that is going to make me go "wow" I don't want a headset that's incrementally better in some areas and worse in others.

I completely understand that. I think with the Q3 being as good as it is I don't think there's a headset in existence right now that will give a wow factor after using a Q3 regularly, there's definitely a law of diminishing returns once something is already so good. The PFD is an improvement over the Q3 overall but the Q3 is much better value for money.

Value for money is relative to how much money you have to spare. From what I have read the next gen headsets will need a 5090 to get the most out of it at least, so there is another £2000 on top of the headset price.

Agree with this. Headsets like the PFD are really only for experienced VR users who know what advantages and disadvantages they will get over the Quest 3 and who understand where the additional money is being spent (basically OLED). In terms of software and quality of life features and some of the hardware specs (lenses, battery) the PFD is definitely worse than a Quest 3.

Basically ONLY get this headset if you want high resolution OLED and wireless standalone features combined. I will do a full review of it when VD Monster Mode and the next OS version are out. and I advise everyone to wait for a couple of months before considering buying it.
