On the last couple of Steam Sales I picked up some old or oldish games that I either had before that were non steam or never owned, some of which I pretty much completely overlooked. Like Quake 4.

Does anyone else really enjoy the fact that with todays hardware you can load them up and ramp up all the quality settings to max and it still runs with decent fps!?

I could only dream of playing Quake 4 on max detail when it was released with the rig I had back then, even high settings was a struggle.

I know exactly what you mean. I recently started Dragon Age Origins again, and the first time I played it my laptop really struggled to play it on high, but now my PC murders it:D

Done this with a few of the old moh games. Allied assault in all it's glory, possibly the greatest online fps ive ever played.

Yeah I love doing this! Haven't gotten Far Cry out yet as that used to be the benchmark on my amd64 pc...

Might do quake 4 again too as I never got more than 2 hours in before I had to re-install the pc :(

Crysis would be the one most people have done this with I'd imagine.

I never bothered with it when it came out when I had my 8800GTX, played it through a while ago with spec in sig after picking the Maximum Edition or whatever it was called (the one with Crysis+Warhead) on Steam in one of their sales :).

i did the farcry one about 2 year ago, looked crap! lol

rFactor with 30+ cars in a single race is awesome without a hint of slowdown :) I can even play games just a couple of years old (AvP Batman AA) maxed out, but most recent games requires a few settings turned down slightly :(

yes my new 2 year old pc I played far cry at full 1080p just the other day, crysis 1 a lot better than when I originally played it.

Also some others like half life 2 which has aged quite bad IMO. It seemed amazing at the time. Now its not really anything special at all.

Very surprised at that comment, as I would say that HL2 has aged very well indeed, still looks and plays great imo and even now I think it seems quite impressive.

Medieval total war 2 and Rome total war with the Europa barbarorum were a couple of the first games I tried out when I built this pc. I had not bees able to run them on max even with a grossly non hd res.

It does. Feels like a miniature golf course with poor draw distance rendering. It's the reason I've just not been installing old games due to keeping it just a great memory, or it'll be tarnished like what happened with Far Cry.

Well I mean I played episodes 1+2 and was kinda underwhelemed compared to more recent titles.

I think HL2 was so breathtaking at the time to play it 5+ years later and just see it in a new light not cutting edge was weird.

I mean its like I remember the FMV sequnces on FF7/8 being amazing and well 15 years later almost they are still good but not breathtaking

Max payne 1 also played recenlty, good game, quite bland but that was the theme/style

Medal honor allied assualt looks pretty crappy, COD 1 and COD 2 look very crappy compared to what I remember them being like sadly.

I only reinstalled far cry a few days ago I really think it looks ok. I like the gameplay anyway its so much better than crysis IMO. Until the monsters come then it gets crap but then it gets good again.

Far cry still has that video game feel where video games look like cartoons but tryint to be real life.

Whereas newer games like bf3 and crysis 2 etc..are just trying to be real life.

Yeah but with the older games there usually isn't a great difference in quality between medium and highest settings.

So if I used to have to play on medium, and now I'm able to max it out I don't see much of a leap graphically.

You can look at this two ways - either older games scaled better with different detail settings OR newer games take advantage of tech much better.

I've just finished playing through HL2, EP1 & EP2 (again) and have loved every second of it.

Even by todays standards in its vanilla form I still think it looks superb.
