Playing old games on Maximum settings !

HL2 is a slight cheat at there have been a couple of official texture updates for it which update automatically through the Steam. The last one was quite big for an older game. That was about 2 years ago.

old games ! Im still playing Wolfenstein Enemy Territory from 2003 and still run it on horrid looking graphics all about performance stable fps and headshots! still will honestly say my 8800gtx was the best by far for this game each newer card has never seemed quiet as good but i blame drivers and yeah over the years my resolution has crept up slightly. Shame that they droped Pb support is some ways but near 9 years on its still pretty busy, very enjoyable and is one of the greatest FPS games ever oh and its Free :)

but i must admit bf3 does get some loving off me as well :)

i loved wolfET still many servers? many hackers?

I may play again?

WolfET is probably my most played online FPS. I spent hours and hours on it :D

Shame there weren't more maps.

This. I've been replaying Quake in 1080p using the 'Darkplaces' mod, along with HighRes textures, nice water, HDR and real lighting :D

Darkplaces is actually a full game engine powering Xonotic, formery Nexuiz, and also the Indie Steam game Steel Storm: Burning Retribution. :)

1598 servers still left

hackers yes but on the populated servers seem less of a problem

a lot of servers run omnibots which is pretty boring nothing better than killing real people

pb support was droped which really hit Et hard unable to create keys etc the limited hacking they did protect against went away but thats life community is still alive and well ive still got 2 active servers since 2004 with no bots and real people so it must still be enjoyable

http://clanrox.com/game/WolfET_2_60b_custom.zip

that link will download you the game with a automatic key generator and have all the last of the pb files and will at least let you play.

Its still pretty popular all be it we all tend to be 30+ now playing it in my clan

a game which just cant be replaced

as for servers lots of choice still, different mods lots of changes made back from the good old days of just etmain. still love it my self

some are bad but there is a lot of great maps

i ve spent way too much time playing et and now its just as much a social event as a competitive game for me any way

theres only like 6 main maps. the rest are user made right?

I didnt mind. people talk about loadsa maps on games but they always play the same 1 or 2 or 3. lol

Ill be at my mates mw2 with 15 maps but they only wanna play the same map over and over.

BF3 people always wanna play their fav map.

Counter strike and everyone only wanna play dust etc..

I use:

Darkplaces: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html (gives you high res, better lighting, HDR, AA and Anniso support)

Real Time Lighting: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/files/romirtlights_id1.pk3 (for better shadows and lighting effects put that in the ID1 folder)

Rygels High Res Textures: http://games.on.net/file/14291/Rygels_High_hi-res_texture_pack_for_LordHavocs_DarkPlaces_Quake_mod (I use the 900MB one, the Ultra pack doesn't look much different and is a much bigger download). Again place it in your ID1 folder, open up the config.cfg file in the same folder and add:

r_glsl 1
r_glsl_offsetmapping 1
r_glsl_offsetmapping_scale 0.05

To the end. Save, and run Darkplaces.

Pretty Water: http://quakeone.com/files/6-pk3-models-textures-darkplaces/39-darkplaces-pretty-water-nice/

Again put that in the ID1 folder.

Gives you what you see in the screenshots previously. :D

Thanks for info, will check these out! :)

You changed any of the in-game options at all? Just got all those installed and it looks different. Mine is a lot darker and the lava in yours is all glowing and stuff. Looks a lot better than mine.

Hehe my mates always ask me why i buy quite a few old games ins team sales, it's exactly for this reason to have them maxed out, get to fully enjoy them this time or relive with them with much better graphics

The readme thread file makes this look complicated to setup. Is it just and "extract and run" operation or do you have to move files around and edit config files?

In the instructions you are given a solution for the retail or Steam versions of Quake. Mine was bought through Steam, all I had to do was copy and paste a couple of PAK files into the (iirc) id1 DarkPlaces folder. If you get stuck then just post on the forums, and I'll assist. :)

As promised, a few screenshots taken from just one level atm :

^^ I've always wondered what a Vore would look like, and did in fact imagine her or it to have 'horsey gums'. :D

In the mod I've set the lighting to full; this may be counter productive when uploading screen shots, but we'll see. Uploading very slow atm, so may post back later if things don't pick up.

ok im dling...gonna play 4 old time sake....seem so old compare to bf3 but really this is the original ''rush'' mode...the map opened up each time an objective was complete usually also to detonate something.

I loved the stationary guns, u could get massive kill streaks

You need to go into options and enable HDR in the lighting menu to get the glowing lava etc, I also upped the game gamma as it's a little too dark by default.

Basically all those packs will give you everything you need, then it's just changing the options to what suits you. :)

I had to copy the pak files into a vispatch folder, run the patch there, then copy them into the darkplaces folder, and it works.
It doesn't yet look as nice as HeX's screenshots, and there's a lot of extra stuff in the download that must be useful somehow...

The optional content folder mentions HUD, lightmaps, special effects, etc.. Have you used any of those?

I just played the first level (brings back memories), and it supports eyefinity resolution of 6048x1200 just fine.

I remember the steam release doesn't have the original CD audio - does anyone know the fix to re-enable that? I have the ogg files necessary.

In options make sure you put effects on High and lighting on Full. Also go into 'customize lighting' and turn on HDR and Bloom.

I also thought it was quite interesting that in the second world the level 'The Dismal Oubliette' had been given an additional part to make it bigger.

There's a story behind that, basically e2m6 was originally designed to be much bigger (extended start section) but it had to be cut due to hardware limitations at the time. More info from JR here: http://planetromero.com/2001/06/quake-birthday-surprise
