Playing old games on Maximum settings !

Medieval total war 2 and Rome total war with the Europa barbarorum were a couple of the first games I tried out when I built this pc. I had not bees able to run them on max even with a grossly non hd res.

I did exactly the same! And I went out and bought Empire and ramped that to the max too :D

I also play mainly older games. On top of the performance advantage the titles have generally been fully patched up and modded. As I only have time to play through games once it is nice for that to be with minimum issues and maximum features.

I've done this with Battlezone 2 - one of the guys who worked on it originally did a hi-res texture patch a year or so back, so not only does the game look really well, it runs like silk, and it's a pretty fast moving game, it plays great at high fps.

Also, Q4 has a pretty decent singleplayer, definitely worth a look.

Mirrors Edge I think is one of the best looking games around, because of how clean the graphics style is.
Ran surprisingly well at the time, even better now.

I'd say so, it's my second favourite Quake title after Q1 - which I'm playing modded atm (looks great btw with the HD pack). :D

This. I've been replaying Quake in 1080p using the 'Darkplaces' mod, along with HighRes textures, nice water, HDR and real lighting :D

Makes it look fantastic:

^^ The amount of effort that has gone into that mod is insane, layers upon layers of work over quite a few years, with a download to match! :)

I also thought it was quite interesting that in the second world the level 'The Dismal Oubliette' had been given an additional part to make it bigger.

Quake 1 looks awesome with that mod, I must check that out. Thanks for the mod details and pics.

Lol, Ive just started the install for Quake on Steam, its only 55mb lol!

Its amazing how game sizes have grown.

Are the High Res textures, water, HDR and lighting all part of the Darkplaces mod or are they separate?

I use:

Darkplaces: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html (gives you high res, better lighting, HDR, AA and Anniso support)

Real Time Lighting: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/files/romirtlights_id1.pk3 (for better shadows and lighting effects put that in the ID1 folder)

Rygels High Res Textures: http://games.on.net/file/14291/Rygels_High_hi-res_texture_pack_for_LordHavocs_DarkPlaces_Quake_mod (I use the 900MB one, the Ultra pack doesn't look much different and is a much bigger download). Again place it in your ID1 folder, open up the config.cfg file in the same folder and add:

r_glsl 1
r_glsl_offsetmapping 1
r_glsl_offsetmapping_scale 0.05

To the end. Save, and run Darkplaces.

Pretty Water: http://quakeone.com/files/6-pk3-models-textures-darkplaces/39-darkplaces-pretty-water-nice/

Again put that in the ID1 folder.

Gives you what you see in the screenshots previously. :D

I'll have to have a look at that one, compare it to what i'm running now, see which I prefer :D

I don't think there is much if any difference, though I could be wrong. I'll post a screen shot later in this thread, we can then compare Death Knights and Ogres! :D

Yeah but with the older games there usually isn't a great difference in quality between medium and highest settings.

So if I used to have to play on medium, and now I'm able to max it out I don't see much of a leap graphically.

You can look at this two ways - either older games scaled better with different detail settings OR newer games take advantage of tech much better.

yeh its more about resolution diff.

Maybe I gamed on 1024x768 or whatever it was?

now I can try at 1080p

Although some games only go up to like 1240x1080?

my numbers all wrong lol
