Playing PC games via a 4k tv?

I was updating to an OLED tv and got 4K as part of the package. I am using an overclocked 6700k @ 4.5ghz and a GTX1080 with a memory overclock. My main monitor is a 34" Widescreen but I do have it hooked up to my TV since it is in the same room.

It all runs through a 10m HDMI cable, into my Marantz SR7010 and then into my TV.

Gaming wise it is noticeably sharper than my old screen ( TXP65ST50 Plasma ), but thats larger because I previously had a rather soft 1080p Plasma, so even a normal 1080p screen would look sharper. The majority of new games run at 45-60 FPS on absolute max at 4k ( Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider ). The rest run at well over 60FPS including such as Bioshock Infinite, The Latest Doom and Life is Strange.

Your living my dream there! Sounds like heaven!

If you're buying a 4K TV now for whatever reason - especially for PC gaming - make sure you get one with a native 120hz panel not 60hz.

Be careful because many brands say the TV is 100/120hz but they don't say this is only through false image processing. Look for true 120hz panels, they may claim silly things like 240hz but again this is through image processing. It's the base native 120hz you're looking for.

TV's have native 120hz panels, but won't actually let you run at 120hz.

Probably a limitation of HDMI. I believe HDMI can do 120hz but only in 3D mode to support 3D. Not in a 2D image.

Thanks! Im not really sure what end result i want but pretty much happy to have it display completely on 1 and switch back to the monitor maybe with a macro of some sort?

I did try extended but couldnt get the game to drag over there! Lol

Windows key and "p" allows you to select the different displays. Either mirrored, single display or extended.

Mainly for smoothness of visuals, especially in FPS games so it's popular with competitive players.

I believe fps and vsync are tied to hz. If you can sustain at least 60fps in a game with vsync enabled, you will have smooth gaming with no screen tearing. The same goes if you can sustain 120fps - or close to it - on a 120hz panel you will get super smooth gaming with little or no screen tear.

I'm just going by the 120hz 1080/1440 vs 60hz 4K monitor debates that go on. I know we're taking about a TV rather than a monitor but the principle is still the same I think. I don't think native 120hz 4K monitors exist yet.

Thanks will try this!

Whats the best "use your phone/ipad as a mouse" app?

I don't know what is regarded as the best but I have used Logitech Touch Mouse in past and it seemed decent. You install the server software on pc and the app on phone/ tablet and then run through a small set up then it works as a touch pad.

Tried gaming at 60fps on my 4k TV. Horrible. Screen tearing. 60hz doesn't really seem to be 60hz for some reason. It put me off gaming for a long time because it was my primary screen at the time and I didn't really want to give up the real estate. Eventually I went back to a 60hz HD screen, and I am SOOO much happier and enjoying gaming again.

Note... my card could handle the fps and the settings I was using, so it wasn't that. Even at HD resolution it was horrible. Racing games were just fine as were third person stuff, but FPS.. no.

Thanks^^

Got a wireless 360 pad on the way to make things easier

One problem i had last night, playing at 4k its fine but if i set the game to 1440p it locks at 30fps across the board

Any ideas? Because i can max games at 60fps 1440p i wanted to see if the tv scaled it well enough to play

I have tried it and it is unsupported. You can add custom settings in nvidia control panel but it will not stick. Only other way would be windowed mode in game and select there? I guess it is either 1080 or 4k, nothing inbetween.

Thanks, may just accept defeat and run older games at 4k and newer ones at 1080!

Nvidia control panel doesnt seem to save any settings regarding my tv! Colour is set to limited under the resolution area so i set it to full but seems to change back each time!

** found a setting on tv to enable UHD colour through hdmi and now its taking 1440p just fine! Looks good from where im sat but will nip back to 1080 and see if its better or worse

UHD is a good point. If i enable it then my sound cuts out. Visually it is great but it may be a limitation of my hdmi cable or AV receiver.

What does it do? Its on atm and it does look better at 1440p than 1080, must be down to individual tvs or something

Sounds seems normal for now, just straight hdmi to the pc albeit 6m long but seems ok atm!

Do wish my pc had the grunt for full 4k at 60fps but this seems spot on at the mo

My 4K TV was a budget screen (still a good picture though) so doesn't support 1440p. I run at 1080p mostly but 4K where I can and it is brilliant. Even with a 970 I find I can run close to max without AA on GTA V and MGS V and keep around the 40+ FPS range.

Thats cool mate, 970 such a good card! Yea im happy to sacrifce frames for 4k; 40frames atleast is spot on imo especially for action games and rpgs that i use a controller for. Trying to force my way through tomb raider, struggling to hild my interest at the mo but its a stunning game visually
