PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

I know a games dev who works with sony and they are being told that ANY ps4 game will be required to fully work on the normal ps4, with the neo being able to provide better FPS,resolution or graphics enhancements such as you would find on a pc game. No "exclusive" neo content or neo "only".

He said this is cast in stone and is a requirement of publishing on the playstation platform.

So seems that they are keeping a tight control on things.

I've seen some shoddy games for the PS3 that works but doesn't perform well.

Interesting reading about Mirror's Edge only being 900p PS4 and 720p Xbone. (Well, beta version anyways.) It has to be 1080p on Neo. But what happens if it's 900p60 on PS4 base and 1080p30 PS4 Neo? Internet explodes.

Thing is though, won't multiplayer titles running at 2 different resolutions and Frames Per Second split the user base. What I mean is, the people with a clearer picture/res and a faster smoother running game have an advantage in games like COD and Battlefield where every millisecond counts.

Latency is an issue on a lot of games.

Personally I can't wait for a PS4.5, anything that gets games nearer to PC levels.

Welcome to PC style gaming. I quite like the idea of a more premium PS4.

Increased FPS will give some advantage but then you have to account for the netcode and the tick rate of servers. I think games like COD already run at close to constant 60fps on PS4 anyway so the Neo will likely just add higher res options and/or more bells and whistles. I think using the Neo could give players an edge, but I don't think it's going to be noticable day to day.

That said, I notice a big difference when I play 120FPS BF4 on PC vs 60FPS but will the Neo double frame rates? I doubt it and I also believe devs will lock FPS just as they do with FOV. But I personally would have preferred Sony to tie devs into always 60fps rather than always 1080p for the Neo, but that's just wishful thinking! :)

Dont think there an instance for a MP game where the Neo will double the FPS limit. I expect that to be developer mandated.

ps3ud0

We just play the game and let the kids cry and kick and scream. Unless someone tells them it's 900p 99.999% of them would never notice or know the difference.

I am under the impression that HDMI cannot handle 1080p120 output. I could be wrong though?

So I'd imagine it would be resolution boosts.

I think it's a good idea. I always thought Sony kicked themselves for not giving the PS3 more RAM and maybe this is their way of trying to beat that. The PS4 is already more powerful than the Xbox One but with bringing out the Neo, it will make it obvious to everyone that the PlayStation is more powerful than the Xbox. Unless MS do similar, there's going to be be plenty of titles in a couple of years where the PS4 version is considered far superior.

as for upgrading, I think people who want one will just buy one. People who aren't interested won't be interested. The 'old' PS4 will be quietly phased out and the neo will soon become just the PS4. a bit like the slim models were introduced.

as long as they sort the software side of things, everyone will be happy.

Oh and something i'm not that interested in (as I have a PS3) I wonder if this is a spec bump to also emulate PS3 games, something that the Xbox One is currently doing.

They wont sell truckloads of PS4.5 at all.

if they price it right they will.

why? because currently 4k blu ray players are around £600.

that's right £600 just to play blu rays. whereas a ps4 can do a hell of a lot more than just play blu rays.

if it's priced right. i'll be buying one. i'll then buy only the very best movies i've really enjoyed in 4k as they are too expensive.

in the UK they are around £25 but Germany has a much bigger selection. once you factor in shipping and import fees your talking £30 easy. I hope they start expanding the 4k blu ray catalogue to the UK when the console hits.

oh and i wont be playing them on a 4k tv simply super sampling to a 1080p.

waiting for 4k OLED's to drop in price.

They'll never do that as it would kill their PlayStation Now service.

I read an article that speculated that Sony could be releasing this to buy them more time developing the Now service.
Effectively releasing period upgrades to the hardware until they become a service provider.

Personally I think we will see a PS5, PS5.5 but maybe a switch to a service system after that.

Samsungs offering can be had for a little over £400. Also what is the spec on the Neo 4k? Is it true 4k or is it simply up scaling? Up scaling 4k blue ray players can be had for around £100 and are classed as 'smart' so have wifi and app functionality too.

I imagine by the time this comes out 4K Blu Ray players will be cheaper. I'm still not convinced on what this will be tbh it all seems a bit of a silly idea if you ask me.

I didn't think it did 4K bluray?

sony invented blu ray did they not?

would be mad not to include it. in fact if they want 4k blu ray to succeed they would subsidise it as the more 4k blu ray players out there. more people buying 4k blu rays. and they get a cut of every sale as license/patent holders i imagine.

if it doesn't do 4k blu ray then uptake won't be anywhere near what it would have been if it did. it would be a sell out with a 4k blu ray player.
