Ok... so I dont get this Near app thing. What is it supposed to do apart from tell you who is nearby playing? How do I see what theyre playing? Is there a way to challenge them to a game of something?
Near is for showing you who is playing nearby, collecting/unlocking game goods (characters, songs, cars for example) and finding challenges (beat my laptime, beat my highscore).
Near can be set to automatically check for it's location every 30 minutes or to not check at all. If it finds itself in a new location it will store that location until it connects to the Near servers to upload that data and download anything that corresponds to it. That upload/download process only happens once a day automatically, or a max of once per hour if you force it manually.
Out and About
If you go into Out and About it will show you the latest locations it has recorded, as well as how many people it picked up in total in that area (at some point in the last x hours, not right at that second). Clicking on a location will bring up the radar which will show you the 10 nearest as well as one brown smiley face for every other group of 10 others. You can also click on the name of the location (Steve Street, Stevetown) at the top of the page and it'll bring up a small Google maps window to show where you were registered at that time.
A black footprint on the left will show that you asked near to update it's location, a grey one is when it updated itself.
The radar will scale to show you 10 other players locally, so currently in the City of London I'm getting scaled down to 1km, if I was in Cornwall that would probably scale to the max of 10km. Grey faces are just people that have no avatar selected.
If you click on one of the players that appear on your radar youll get their PSN ID, time they were registered in that area, the games they have been playing as well as any gifts they might have dropped (automatic). If you then click on the avatar again (top left next to the X) you';ll bring up their trophy lst, can send them a message, add them as a friend.
Friends
Going into Frieds will show you a list of all the things your friends have been upto. That can be getting trophies, setting new laps times, finding relics, making new friends. You can click on any of these and like them or comment on them just like Facebook. No notification is sent to the player though. No idea if that will change.
Discoveries
Discoveries will show you how many people you've met, how often you've met them, any game goods you've come across, how long until those good expire.
Don't forget, game goods are only yours if you click on them and click the Orange circle with the Green arrow in to download. Also the good will expire if you don't have the game to go with them.
